Dog wee stain in carpet

Dog peed on newish carpet. Carpet is supposed to be stainproof. This happened last bonfire night, he was scared. Tried 1001 for carpets and a mini steam cleaner but stain reappears like he's just done it. No smell though (small mercies). Any ideas please. 7 year guarrantee on carpet, heavy duty beige loop, supposed to be able to use bleach on it too.

    Sure. :)

Take a look at the "MEGA Index" sticky at the top of the board and click on the Pets section. There's a post on cat pee on a carpet which should help you.

There are also tips on cleaning potty training mishaps from carpets in the Cleaning section which might help.

Simple solution is the product I use and it is very good. Likewise Oxyclean.
  • Help - I've got a puppy who isn't yet quite housetrained and just found she's been weeing behind the couch. And it now STINKS! It smells just like a cats litter tray.

We have some family coming over on Sunday and I need to get rid of the smell quick sharp!

Here's what I've done so far (to no avail)

Vaxed the area using the special pet solution for my Vax machine
Steam cleaned it twice using my steam cleaner which is supposed to deodorise any smells! (Yes, I love cleaning carpets!)

It just smells like really strong ammonia when we come downstairs and iits driving me mad! What can I do??

  • Hi

I've got the same problem at the moment too. I've used my Bissell and there was still a smell so searched the mega index and it suggested using white vinegar/water spray for urine smells which I did yesterday and then stomped over it with a towel. Came down this morning and I can't smell anything now. Think I'll repeat it today just to be sure I've got it all but it seems to have worked well. Last time this happened I had to wash the carpets about 6 times before the odour lifted. Bloomin' dogs (love em really)!

Hi surgical spirit is good for neutralising the smell.
It also puts them off going there again.

I've used vinegar successfully before. The spray we bought from the vet actually changed the colour of the carpet - so we never used that again. If it's a cream coloured carpet a weak solution of bleach also works - but obviously not on any other colour!!

The only thing I've found that really really works is Simple Pet Solution, availabe from pet shops, petsmart & the like. It costs about £6 for half a litre but you don't need to use that much & it really does do the trick. Pour neat over the area, leave to soak for 10 mins then scrub with a brush & hot soapy water & no trace of the smell (or stains from "other" accident) when it dries, although the pile of your carpet is left all fluffed up!

  • Alot of cleaning products are amonia based and this smells devine to a dog! This means they will keep going back to the same place to wee again. If you use a biological washing powder to clean it this won't happen. i'm not sure whether this will clear the smell entirely but it will stop your pup from weeing in the same place again.

The best thing is one part water, one part vinegar (as mentioned above) to neutralize the smell. To clean, sponge with water, pat dry, then rinse in a little antiseptic added to a bowl of cold water..
