Does anyone else feel like their house is overrun with plastic tubs!!

Options
Just a small moan really! but since I have been trying to cook as much of my own food as possible - freezing portions, taking food to work etc - I seem to spend my life in a cycle of using washing and re-using small plastic tupperware tubs! Mostly I use plastic takeaway tubs and cheap asda tupperware. Boyfriend thinks I've gone mad.

Also have quite a lot of 'mystery food' in the freezer :o

ha, we had lots of mystery food in the freezer, most of it turned out to be stew. Now I label everything as I go along so I know what I'm eating!!

I know what you mean about the plastic tubs tho - we also use the takeaway type plastic ones. You can't fit to many in the dishwasher which always drives me mad as well.

    Hi there

You aren't alone, i risk an avalanche every time i open 1 particular cupboard :rotfl: -it doesn't stop me from saving them though..
At the moment its only hubbies ice cream thats providing tubs... but bless him -he has the one in a lovely square tub -nice and easy to fit in the freezer ;)
Its stunning ice cream (walnut, wild cherry, capuccino etc)and 99c for 1litre -just a nice size and cheaper than buying tubs :j

I recently cleared out my double garage (a bi-yearly job) and took sack after sack of old tupperware and saved tubs 'n' pots to the tip. Why do I save them when the lids are missing or mangled from being nuked in the micro, not to mention all being stained that 'Judith Charmers Orange Hue' IYKWIM:D

I have lots of tubs with no lids and lots of lids with no tubs....why does nothing match!
  • I'm the same, i've got tons of them threatening to fall out of the cupboard every time its opened  Some of them have no lids, some have lids but no bottom bit  I WILL clear it out soon i promise cos i'm not taking a load of c**p with us when we move.

I use a white-board pen to label my boxes, it washes off easily afterwards, i've had a few 'mystery dinners' in the past though lol.

I use lock and lock ones for storing things in the fridge and cheap smartprice ones for freezing as most of it tends to be bolognese, chilli, curry etc which stains.

I think I might have a "tuppaware clearout"... I only really use a few of them anyway - shapes that either fit one portion or two - nothing else really gets used...

I know plastic tubs can be a problem - but on the other hand, nothing is more frustrating than making a nice fresh batch of ice cream and then find you have nothing to put it in.....!
How about this method - it seems to work for me. In the garage, we have the large Ikea bins for the re-cycling (it doesn't get collected where we live, so we have to take it to the appropriate place ourselves). They are the bins of which half of the lid flaps up so you can throw things in easily and shut it again. I have bought two extra of those: one for plastic tubs and one for jam jars. When those bins are full, I stop saving tubs and jars because I know I have enough stock for any preserving spree or freezing frenzy. Once they start looking half-way down, they will be filled up again with washed ones or newly gained ones as come along. That way they don't take up valuable cupboard space, but they still stay clean and usable because of the lids on the bins. And you always have some when you need them.

great plan... unless you live in a new build which they didn't think would need a garage... already struggling with OH over allowing me space in his precious (tiny) shed for a freezer :)
