just take the laptop off her

Yes - as I said in my intial post - it is in a drawer but she needs to use it for her homework as studying for GCSE's so not a long term solution.. Plus she bough it with her own money as she reminds me at least twice a day!
  • True - Although any techie child capable of finding open access points will probably be able to reverse the BIOS entry - it's only a couple of keystrokes.

Removing the wifi card will be harder to overcome ;)

That's why when you're in the BIOS you set an admin password. ;)

Considering how cheap they are now, she could always buy a USB Wireless adapter and knacker both our cunning plans anyway!

If you still want to try the BIOS route, hit F2 when the Dell screen shows up just after you turn on the laptop. It should bring up a blue screen (if it's anything like my Dell lappy, anyway) with a load of settings. Scroll to 'Wireless Settings' and open it up, set the wireless adapter to off or disabled, whatever sounds like "not on". Save the settings and exit. Job done!

Of course if she's *that* technically minded, she could always disassemble the laptop, remove the CMOS battery, resetting it to factory settings and getting rid of the password and your settings changes...

I do like the idea of the timed firewall mentioned above though!

It works as long as you change the routers password from the default so she can't log into it and alter it.

What OS is it? If it's Vista there are some good parental controls in it as standard. SAo long as she has a limited user account and deosn't know the admin password.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die
