Underneath the laptop will be a couple of screws to the wifi card.
Undo these and remove the card carefully- job done :)

(obviously disconnecting the power supply etc)
  • Oooh, nevermind the screwdriver! If its a built in wireless adapter, you should be able to disable it in the BIOS and prevent it from starting automatically. Can't remember the procedure - can have a look at my Dell laptop when I get home from work though!

If it's a fairly new laptop it will have the wireless symobol on one of the keys, usually a number key and in a different colour.

Hold down the Control and Wireless key and job done for a while
It's taken me years of experience to get this cynical

try pressing f2 or f10 or f8, or if there is a message when you start the laptop up about going into setup or the bios setup, or go start control panel, network connections, then right click on the one for wireless card and select disable
smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... ;)
  • I have three daughters.
I have never had to resort to such trickery.
When this school girl starts staying out too late are you gonna tamper with her *BIOS* and turn her into a pumpkin.
Your proposed behaviour will do nothing to build your future father dau relationship.
Or maybe that's what you have been doing and why she is behaving like she is now.

True - Although any techie child capable of finding open access points will probably be able to reverse the BIOS entry - it's only a couple of keystrokes.

Removing the wifi card will be harder to overcome ;)

What router have you got? On mine, I can create a rule in the firewall to block traffic for a specific IP address based on times I set.

Also, check out Once Care Family Safety which is free from Microsoft here:

One of the things it allows you to do is control internet time and what sites can be visited. As it's on the laptop, she can't merely use someone elses wireless.

And you may want to point out to her that using someone elses wifi without their permission, whether its secured or not, is a criminal offence under the Computer Misuse Act and if the neighbour finds out and reports this, either you or her could end up in court as quite a few other people have this year. It might be enough.
