Whilst I agree that almost everyone is struggling financially at the moment. How the hell is the Post Master/Mistress or counter assistant expected to find this missing £800. I would imagine they would struggle desperatley to find this money. I hope you have done the right thing and given this money back.
It's stealing plain and simple and someone is going thru hell because you have not gone straight back and pointed out the mistake.
:j I have a persecution complex. Everytime I pass a shoe shop they persecute me till I buy them:j

Yes I would certainly fess up and tell them, it will go in your favour and you never know they might give you a little something for you honesty, if it a small post office the bloke that owns it will be facing a £800 defecate, not good for him as he might not even turn over that amount in a week's trading!
Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.

Hmmmm. Not good for anyone to spend too long looking at an £800 defecate. How do you put a value on the stuff, by the way ? :rotfl:

OP Most Post Offices have CCTV These days coupl ethat with the fact each transaction will have the time recorded and if I were the post master the higher transactions are the first i would check - Quick check on the CCTV and sound would reveal 'Hi I would like to deposit £260 please' against a transaction of £1060. Pop back be polite and say youve only just noticed, Its the right thing to do and this way you can feel good about helping them out (Rather than have them come chasing for the cash back)
  • I really hope the OP did the right thing and went back to the Post Office and told them of the error.

It's not a nice feeling when you lose money and it would eat away at the cashier for a long time. Not only that but the cashier would think that their manager might think they stole the money and ruin their working relationship.

When I did a cash declaration at the end one day last week, the system said I had a £3000 loss. I counted and recounted, but the money I entered was correct... luckily I found the missing money within 5 minutes, I'd only took a cheque for £3000 to cash by mistake and found the mistake when the cheques I had didn't tally with the cheque report printout. Easily corrected, but the feeling isn't nice when you find you have a huge loss.

Its not yours to spend or save. Tell the the bank or the po. If I were you I would feel thoroughly ashamed of myself by asking the question in the first place.

I completely agree have had a few experiences like this but just not the same scale, hand the money back correct there mistake and you will be rewarded with satisfaction that you made a diference and then staff for sure will be on there toes, the post office is in enough trouble and should never be challenged with dishonesty! £800 is the amount of a months income for most familys, using your children is no reason to excuse this kind of behavour do the right thing ! You dont have to give them appologies and you will see that it will be you that recieves them! Leave it untill your found out and it will be your self who is left embarresed !
