Brown bread - not oldstyle and not particulary moneysaving

I'm having a 'simple things' moment here so go with me on this, lol.

Ok, although I'm advocating shop bought bread (and not particularly cheap shop bought at that) I've finally found brown bread I like and thought I'd share just in case there's anyone out there like me, lol.

I HATE brown bread with a vengeance *spit, spit*. I know it's healthier than white but hard as I've tried over the years, I just can't stomach the stuff. I'm really trying to shake my not so great diet up and eat better, but bread has always been an issue. (Not got the inclination to make my own I'm afraid.)

I've spent a small fortune trying various brands, types etc all to no avail, until........

I came across Hovis Sunny. This has got a distinctly nutty flavour and it has sunflower seeds in it. So for anyone who thinks they should eat brown bread but hates the stuff, try this. I wish someone had told me about it yonks ago, it's better for you than white, doesn't taste nasty like brown and I'd have saved a fortune on trying everything else, lol.

Squeaks, I couldn't think of another board where the peeps might be interested in bread, so although it's not oldstyle as such, I figured it would be ok here. Please just delete it though if it's not ok. :) Also just delete if the peeps on here are not interested in my drivel about bread either. :rotfl:

Maybe someone can come up with bread machine recipes for us? ;)

    Hello Aliasojo

It's good that you've found a brown bread you can enjoy. I prefer wholemeal bread. I used to work in a flour mill and know exactly what they add to white flour (lots of chemicals) so avoid white bread as much as possible.;)

I agree that the price of small (uncut) loaves of brown or wholemeal bread are expensive but it's a luxury treat we have for breakfast at the weekend. I like the wholemeal loaves with either cracked wheat or sunflower seeds sprinkled on the top.

It has to be real butter (not that plastic margarine nonsense) on the toast too.

I'll share one funny story with you from my flour mill days. For one of the lab tests, we used a chemical to stain the flour. I innocently wiped my hands on the back of my white labcoat and walked around all day with two black hand prints on my bum. I brought a smile to a few faces that day.:rotfl:

Essentially it seems to me that Old Style encompasses all that would, in our school days, have been called Home Economics. Plus a whole lot more of course. :)

Buying bread  Shock horror!! is, as you say hardly Old Style :) unless it's on offer, of course... just teasing... but a request for a recipe now... that's an entirely different matter! Very Old Style.

    AND...

..it just so happens that I added a bread recipe thread to the MEGA Index less than an hour ago. A poster asking for recipes and getting pointed to a useful site.

So off ya go and do yerself some research and come back and let us know how you got on :)

It was sunny bread that lead me to making my own bread!!!!!

I love it!!! I have bought better bread (not cheapo bread) for years but just adored sunny as soon as the first crumb touched my lips.!!! BUT I could rarely find it! Every sandwhich with other stuff was a disappointment!

Then I got use of a bm...I now make all my own. It doesnt matter if its brown white or anything its just nice!!! (Todays is the ciabatta ....lovely!!!)

I noticed that there is a packet mix for sunny but at over a quid it was about the same price as a real loaf ... def not OS !!!!

however I do treat myself to some granary flour with malt and grains which bakes up a delish loaf along the same lines . Also the five seed loaf is great too. (panasonic recipe book). Both of these have sunflower seeds.

I can't stand nasty cheap bread! Hang the cost, it's got to be Kingsmill Gold for me and nothing else (or lovely crusty white rolls, yum yum).

So after the initial cost of the bread making machine, how much does it cost to make a loaf ingredient wise?

It varies with the loaf you're making, the extra ingredients such as nuts or fruit you might use and, of course, whatever deals you can get on flour.

For a basic loaf I typically cost it at between thirty and forty pence. Even at one loaf a week my cheap and cheerful breadmaker paid for itself in less than a year.

    No, no, no :naughty:

Brown bread is not automatically healthier - it depends on your overall diet. If you're getting essential vits, mins & fibre elsewhere, then white bread is fine. But homemade white bread is probably better than shop bought. And homemade white bread may even be better than shop bought brown - even Hovis Sunny

Diet & nutrition is not about each individual item ... more about the "whole" picture :D

I make a white bread with three seeds in it ... sunflower, poppy and either sesame or pumpkin. And sometimes I make it with wholemeal flour instead.

With any shop bought bread there's a compromise .... you might get the vits, mins & fibre, but you get the additives too - additives that you simply don't use/need in homemade bread (flour improver? ascorbic acid? preservative?)

Enjoy your bread, but don't buy the hype :D
    Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac ;)
