Finding the right combination of meds, counselling and personal therapy is bl00dy hard - but the right combination is there somewhere.
Hi, I spent more than 3 years with same counsellor around 6 years ago. I think finding the right counsellor/ relationship is most important, rather than theoretical approach (I've tried CBT and psychodynamic). I was lucky I think, after meetings with a couple of therapists (CBT helped short term) I got low (ish) cost counselling. Cost can be important for long term stuff and you could find one with a sliding scale. Still have days but honestly (mostly) feel able to manage - rare that I ever feel overwhelmed any more or unable to cope. Not sure of my darkest hour looking back, seems almost distant. Walking and stuff (activity) does seem to work-changes chemicals or something, but a good counsellor will let it get real without freaking out- it can be terrifying and you both have to be brave (you and counsellor- you'll get a feel for that), but it's worth searching.0 -
Oh heck! Sorry SS as it was me that referred to you as "She"!!!:o I can only think it's because you always sound do sympathetic on posts to people that I just assumed you were female! That's not to say that I think fellars aren't sympathetic, quite the contrary I know as my OH is so very sensitive and brilliant at all problems with girls or fellars.
Anyway, before the hole risks getting deeper and wider, I'll shut up! Apologies! Sue.
Do you want me to pass you the ladder?0 -
Oh yes please! Though knowing my luck it'll be a rope one and I'll land in the.........! Good job we both have a sense of humour - good for either sex I'd say!!:D

You do NOT sound like a right miserable cow at all, you have a problem and are sharing it with us, just as many of us are doing with ours to you on this very thread. Nothing wrong with that as it only does GOOD! I can definately believe you're often the life and soul of things, a joker too, but all of us with depression are capable of being the same, sometimes it's a 'front' and others it's the real 'us' being able to be let out! To think people are judging you is also quite natural as that too is all part of being depressed.
You may need to go back to the Dr, but PLEASE don't let her sign you off. As you've said before, it would only make the whole situation worse and you'd have far too much time to sit and think...and think...and....! If the Dr knows anything about depression at all, she should know perfectly well that that's a stupid thing to suggest. If you're in a Group Practice then try to see another by ringing on a day you know yours is off!
Don't forget that walk or exercise in the house, it'll really do you good.
Good luck, Sue.
i'm going to try and get an apt with the doc next week, just a bit worried i've had about 12 different antidepressants but none have ever worked. i should move in there the amount of apts i have:rotfl:The only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about - Oscar Wilde:beer:

Be careful of any more antidepressants BMshoes, they can often be more of a pest with the effects they give! Try some relaxing oils, especially Lavender Oil. Put in a glass dish with a tea candle underneath burning it sends the aroma all over the room and REALLY does work wonders in relaxing you! You need to be as relaxed as possible, try some relaxing music and get a relaxation tape the 3 combined (the Lavender Oil with music or relaxation tape) are marvellous tools for warding off depression, give them a go and you'll see.
Did you read RichS's post (No 22), if not have a look through as he/she adds some valuable notes. Good luck again.

Hi bringmeshoes
Have been lurking on your thread.. but not posted before.
I have opted for Gestalt therapy instead of pills. It has really been a turnaround for me. However it may not be available on the NHS unless your GP is prepared to swing a recommendation. My therapist has helped me to understand WHY I get depressed and how to counteract it...and I have to say she really is SOME lady (and if you want me to get her to recommend someone similar in your area I am happy to do so.....just PM me..she has already made referrals for two of my friends based upon the visible results with me!!...But it is really important you get someone you feel you trust and can work with. I went through 5 therapists over a period of 10 years before I found Jane..and she really is on the ball for me!!) I considered medication but opted not to take it, because I felt all it would do was make me feel better day to day (i.e. mask the problem) but wouldn;t actually help me with how to stop it happening in future and give me a long term solution.
It IS the case that medication for some people is a very useful starting point to enable them to move forwards...but it may not work for everyone and you appear from your posts to indicate you might be one of those people.
So there are ways forward...and if you want to know of a suitable person in your area please PM me. I can;t recommend this type of help highly enough...but obviously, as in any profession....you get good and not so good people....so it's a case of "interviewing" until you find someone you click with!
Hang on in there...and thank you so much for posting on other threads despite the fact you're feeling a bit **** at the moment!!
Thinking of you
Much love

P.S. In my bad time, I had lost my home, my partner and my family in the space of six weeks. Although GP wrote me off work for a month, and my CEO nted to confiscate my computer because I ws off sick...I persuaded her that work was my ONLY anchor and very fundamental to moving forwards..so she relented....I worked at my own pace with no pressure/deadlines etc...and it didn;t just really help..it was fundamental to my recovery.

wol: i'm great at giving advice and cheering other people on...just not me !
i'm a bit weary and cynical of things because i've been depressed all my life, i mean literally since my first memory, i even tried cutting myself when i was 4 or 5 (realised i didnt like blood so never did that again)
on theory that one psychiatrist had was a faulty gene i may have as both of my paternal uncles are mentally handicapped (one so severe he has never lived at home)The only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about - Oscar Wilde:beer:

just when i thought i couldn't feel worse i've had a really crap day at work, so much so i almost walked out there and then. it started on friday when we got told that they were drawing names out of a hat to work boxing day and new years day (it's supposed to be voluntary unless they can't get enough people to work, i work in back office and there is no work to do on bank holidays) now i've lways offered to do some of the bank holidays in the beginning of the year so i dont have to work the christmas ones, so now ive decided to not to volunteer for any of them if there is the chance i will have to work the christmas ones. then today i find that all the holidays i have submitted for over christmas have been declined so now i don't get any days of over christmas and may have to work the bank holidays aswell. this had really p****d me off as i really disagree with being made to work bank holidays, i dont even believe that as a company we should open on a bank holiday, i also have the problem of no transport as i dont drive and there is no public transport on a bank holiday. this has just made me feel so much worse that i dont even want to go back in tomorrow or ever for that matterThe only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about - Oscar Wilde:beer:
