  • I fancied a PVR with a DVD recorder on it so that if I recorded a program I wanted to keep then I could burn it onto a DVD. I looked just after Christmas and they were really expensive. Does anyone have any recommendations or can point me in the right direction?
    Thanks.
  • :T My tele has built in freeview can I still connect one of these recorders?
  • Forgive my ignorance/laziness but do any of these things exist with slots for Setanta cards?

I have a Humax 9200t and it does have a slot for a CAM which you can buy from ebay, it also allows you to record 2 channels and watch another on the same MUX as mentioned earlier.
In my and many other peoples opinion it is one of the best PVRs on the market as it has been continually had OTA software updates.

I would suggest that anyone thinking of buying a PVR reads through the thread on the DIGITAL SPY forum. They can be wildly variable but reading on there will give you an idea of what to avoid.
I am unfortunate enough to be one of the people completely shafted by the ALDI TECHNOSONIC PVR101. Late last year they broadcast an update to the firmware which has rendered most units unuseable but they aren't doing anything about it, much to their shame. The Tevion 801 and 1620 PVR have exactly the same problem so do not buy one off ebay, there are several on there at the moment at discount prices.
Having said that PVR's are amazing and will change the way you watch TV. I can hardly remember the last time I watched TV at the time it was broadcast. Most have an 8 day programme guide so on sunday morning I flick through and set all the things I want to watch to record. Easy, and I can skip through the adverts with the 2 minute skip button too. Recommend one to anybody, just make sure you get the right one.

Can you use a Sky+ box with a Freesat card and record without subscribing?
AFAIK you have to subscribe, you will only be able to receive, not record.

BTW the Beeb is due to launch a proper Freesat service (on a non Sky/Astra sat.), this year with HD channels.

They are also supposed to be looking into doing a HD channel on Freeview, but because of bandwidth/channel restrictions prior to analogue switchoff, it will only transmit 2am to 6 am. Ofcom has approved this.

On the subject of pvr's I have had quite a few over the years and the only ones that survived were an old Thomson (40g), a Humax and the TUTV thomson.

The Thomson one that our local Aldi had in a few days ago has Top-up TV - I presume that's what you mean. We got ours from Tesco Direct - about £90 from either Tesco or Aldi. John Lewis were advertising it too but had none in stock at the time. It's OK but a bit noisy on standby, and the TV guide screen has annoying ads for Top-up TV across the bottom that we don't seem to be able to turn off.

Before that we had a Digihome PVR80, which we liked, but we bought it (from Argos) on 7/1/07 and then on 9/1/08 it went "Whump". If only it'd gone three days earlier we could have taken it back! I freecycled it and the recipient told me later that the main capacitor had gone, taking most of the main board with it, but the hard disk was OK and he'd been able to install it in his PC.

    Have I goofed again???
I repeat I have a Grundig PVR GUSTB801V. This machine now nearly a year old allows you to record 2 programmes and you can still watch at the same time a previously recorded one. Oh happy days no adverts!!!!!!!!!!!!
