Why do companies sell with 9's (ie, £699 instead of £700)

Hey, no! I really appreciate your opinion, if its one thing I hate its arguing rants (and i get it a lot lol)
To reply to your question, the thing that really gets me is 1) yeah, their job is to make money, and I understand that, and absulootly am FOR it, but the thing I completely disagree with is their attitude towards selling, why sell a product for £9999.99 if not to completely misslead your judgement
I wouldnt mind otherwise, but if its the companys' free-will to sell like this isnt that rather 'norty' of them and somewhat greedy on their part to make money by 'fooling' us? (again i use the word 'fool us' because as I said above thats exactly what they're doing to us, its proven to gain more profits (thats why I believe they do it)) - unless someone can lighten my life by telling me otherwise
Hi
I know how it works; but honestly - there are other things in life to get worked up about...my OH's daughter now knows not to say £9 when it is £9.99 - she knows it is £10...and she's 100 -
Why even worry about something like this at all? Seriously, letting nines in prices get you so angry you have health issues?
not yet but i've come to realise i'll go with a heart attack the way i keep going, i dunno if i've devoloped something that only one in 100 people can realise or if im just imagining it all but i really wish i could 'ignore' or 'let it slip' but it really gets to me having companies making billions the way they do (and millions of that would be because of the way they 'screw' us)
dont get me wrong, lol this is not jealosy lol! if i won the lottery i would NOT buy a NEW (08) car im THAT serious about this sort of thing and seem im the only one trying to prevent it. it CAN be provented, but companies do it because we let them (like too many ads on TV, or the way they inturrupt programs on telly in ways that we feel abliged NOT to move away from the telly to make that bru you've been gagging for all day) - they really dont care about us.
I dont mind them making money, its how they make it and 80% of it is at our expense (like examples above)
ack! here i go again..
Rest in Peace, Emily. Say hi to Robbo for me xxx
WHY BUY PRODUCTS FROM COMPANYS THAT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON ADVERTISING -IT'S YOUR MONEY THEY'RE WASTING!(PROOF OF OVERCARGING?):T FINALLY DEBT FREE! :T0 -
This is what my dad told me a while ago, but its pretty difficult to believe. Don't get me wrong, I honor your opinion, but if thats the case why do online-only retailers do it? -they dont deal with cash

Obviously online retailers can't be doing it for this reason.
I suppose they could say they do it ensure their prices match their competitors. If their competitor sells something for £19.99 and they round their price up to £20 they may lose sales as their price is higher.0 -

so to make life happier for me, companies do it simply to prevent fraud?

YES
wrap it up - put it in the bin and move on...
make a cuppa and have ten minutes sitting down.
don't think about it again - just work on the best price for what you want - don't worry about the 1p, worry about the £19.99!!!0 -
OP - you just need to take a wander round Next when you get worked up again. They don't use .99 in their prices. Neither do Debenhams, I don't think.
I can't believe people get worked up about stuff like this when there are more important things to get worked up about. Like spelling.OD Girls On TourBarcelona 2008 - Dublin 20090 -

And punctuation [and starting sentences with And].0 -
OP, are you serious about this?
I simply disagree that people are too stupid to realise that £19.99 is 1p away from £20-if there are people who are genuinely 'fooled' by this, as a previous poster says, 'A fool and his money are soon parted'. It's not a secret scam-it's a simple matter of reading clearly printed labels. Personally, I round things up as I do my shopping so that I know roughly what my shopping will cost when I get to the till.
As Asda often sell things rounded up (eg. £2 for a cake) and Sainsburys sell the same thing at £1.99, how is it better that Asda are actually getting 1p more of your money? If companies profiteering is your concern, in that illiustration, £1.99 is obviously cheaper -
I have tried reading the thread and still can't make much sense of the complaint! Would you rather everything was rounded up so that your shopping costs more?0 -
There are other things to worry about.
Only a moron would have his judgement clouded by a simple -1 off a round number."I'm not from around here, I have my own customs"
For confirmation: No, I'm not a 40 year old woman, I'm a 26 year old bloke!0 -
If you look even more carefully, shops are now using the latest trick of using "7" at the end, especially on CD sales when they advertise it on the TV, eg, only £7.97 or £9.77
This has been known for a while and is used because psycologically a 7 is no where near a 10, but to the shop, it is close enough not to make a big difference.
Or when the sofa company and a certain computer store say "only SIX NINE NINE" when they mention the price.
If you know what you are looking for, you can spot it a mile away and it will drive you mad.0
