I'm Theravada branch - I eat meat, but not to gluttony. I eat to live, basically, not live to eat :) Myself and husband eat meat maybe twice a week, and appreciate it as a bit of variation in our lives and sometimes as a treat, but not a necessity.
  • Typical - there's always an opt out. When I was in Malaysia we went to a buddhist temple where people were taking turtles and putting them into a small pond - apparently if you saved a turtle from turtle soup it would help you in the afterlife. Have NEVER seen so many turtles in one place. totally bonkers

I went to a talk on Jainism last year: it requires its adherents to be vegetarian (and many are vegan and avoid root vegetables), and may have influenced the introduction of vegetarianism into various strands of Hinduism.
  • Sorry - I'm just being annoying  It's because my OH is being unsupportive uuuuuugh! I've become a 'veggie pusher' as I don't eat it (meat that is) myself and am giving up fish starting on Wednesday. :T

...aaah..forgot Jainism...'scuse me for that....should have remembered that programme about Dartmoor t'other day some of us were watching on my "simplify life" thread. His name escapes me right at moment - Satish....?...but I had read the story of his life before that and remembered that he wouldnt even remove "life" from his hair if it decided to reside there:eek: :D and it was evident, from the programme, that he has still retained an enormous respect for life in many ways - well...good for him.

After a discussion about the contents of children's lunchboxes, and expectations, I realised that in my childhood (mid 1960s onwards) Chocolate & crisps were still treats. Crisps were served and Grandma's for Sunday tea, or at Christmas; and on Fridays if we were particularly good, my Mum would stop by at a corner shop on the way home from school and buy a kit-Kat for herself, my sister & I to share.
We still had, as part of our regular food, a pudding of some sort or another, after the main meal each day.
What I thought was, if I withdrew from my diet all of these little treats I now expect on a daily basis, I might really appreciate a chocolate Easter egg at Easter, or a box of chocolates at Christmas. And if I followed my childhood diet, (smaller portions and lower expectations) for the whole of Lent, maybe that would help with the self restraint I'd like to practice, as well as re categorising certain things as treats once more.

I'm going to try a bit of a carbon fast from a christian org called tearfund(www.tearfund.org) it's not completely fasting carbon, obviously, but fasting something different each day to... to think about how we can all do our bit to cut carbon, reduce our footprint, think of others etc etc. Whatever you think about global warming etc I think it's a good idea!

I'm your good old traditional C of E - but we're often encouraged to actually do something positive rather than give something up - same principle - 40 odd days of a good habit is likely to stick longterm. So, could be adopting a new habit rather than giving one up....will be giving some thought to this over the next 24 hours or so. And Lent starts this Wednesday, and finishes at Easter. Dates vary year on year, but it always is the 40 days (plus Sundays) before Easter - and Mothering Sunday is the 3rd Sunday in Lent (ie 2 weeks before Easter Day).
    Resolution:
    Think twice before spending anything!
