i will be giving up alcohol for lent, this will help me loose a few pounds as well - i am already eating healthily - giving up wine will definitally help me. good to know sundays dont count as maybe a small glass of wine with sunday lunch will help me through the week.

donny-gal. I like the way that you think.

I started to give up something for lent about 10 years. First I started with chocolate bars, then it was anything that had chocolate in it including Hot chocolate.

I don't really drink so that would have been too easy.
Now i give up chocolate, sweets, crisps, and desserts.

  • I've never given anything up for Lent either, but this year I am giving up swearing. Will get DD's to make me a label for a jar for with their sticker machines. Hopefully this might encourage me to give it up entirely. I dont go around swearing like a trooper I might add, nor does the F word pass my lips very often, and I also dont swear at work, but for some reason at home it does just slip out unintentionally, like a bad habit.

Im already on a diet, so I cant give up chocolate as have already done so, cant give up smoking or alcohol as I dont partake of either, theres only swearing left!

(Cant start cooking from scratch as I already do that or give up unnecessary purchases etc as I dont tend to make any if I can help it, shop with a list etc and OH would leave home if we gave up meat!)

I'm an atheist, however in the spirit of embrasing other people's culture and religon ~ I'll join in.
I'm givin up Chocolate  Yep , definitly chocolate, for a whole six weeks. Over on the "Weightloss the O/S Way Thread" some of us are being good for the whole of February so its only another 2 weeks after that! Easy Peasy  Perhaps religon is good for somethings ;) ~ think I should give up swearing too!

I suppose the above wouldn't work for me??

As a child there was lots of peer pressure to give up things...and one of the nonos was to save the sweets for Easter...gave up sugar in my tea for Lent almost 50 years ago and haven't gone back...would give up swearing except that I can't afford to pay any fines I would impose on myself!

Will have to give it some thought as I tend not to deny myself much any more and I reckon I should do something to get myself into a little self discipline...used to be could at it but been going down hill for years.

    I've been Money Tipped!
I have given up alcohol as I wanted to see if my energy levels improved, I started on feb 1st as part of a weightloss challenge and so far have not missed it which is surprising as I love a glass of red! For Lent I will also give up sweeties as well - this is going to be very difficult for me (panic is setting in already!) but can only benefit my health and teeth!
Our days are happier when we give people a bit of our heart rather than a piece of our mind.

I'm a fully paid up member of the Church of Non Self Deprivation. :D

But I will make a concerted effort to cut back on the unneccesary spending as I should really be doing that anyway. :o

hmmmmm......this is actually quite a new concept to me...as I've been in various Christian churches...but not ones where this came up. Could be quite a useful idea....a lead-in for maybe giving up longer-term something one knows one shouldnt really have (the list of what that consists of could take me till midnight to formulate - lol). Sorta like a "trial marriage" in effect ...few weeks giving up "whatever"...then if it works out fine...keep going...

What dates are Lent? Could you explain/give an Internet link to an article explaining...as I dont know anything at all about this idea other than the phrase "giving up something for Lent".
