Play your cards right and the conversation could go a different way...
"oh hey, i got this for you"

"WOW, this must have cost a bomb"

"yes dear, I got my old wedding ring, had it completely remade to symbolise my fresh start with you, and had it custom made in the style you like"
    :D
    My TV is broken!
Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j

You know I think the idea of doing something with the ring that might be a very good idea. Maybe get something made for my wife.

Hmm do you think she would be pleased or offended by me making a ring for her from my previous marriages wedding band?

    Thanks,
    Ossian

That would be a very insensitive idea. Every time she looked at it she'd be reminded of your previous marriage.
  • sell it. Go to a proper jeweler, not a pawnbroker, and see what they will offer for it. Then spend the money on your wife :D

Hi - Precious Metal prices change everyday (Gold twice - morning and afternoon). Today's afternoon prices for scrap are:

    Scrap MetalDateGBP/Unit9ct Gold Scrap Tue 05 Feb 2008 5.036 GM 14ct Gold Scrap Tue 05 Feb 2008 7.857 GM 18ct Gold Scrap Tue 05 Feb 2008 10.073 GM 22ct Gold Scrap Tue 05 Feb 2008 12.302 GM Platinum Scrap Tue 05 Feb 2008 21.397 GM Silver Scrap Tue 05 Feb 2008 212.011 KG

You will probably get less than this though if you take it to a Jeweller - because he will want some profit out of the transaction. But it will give you a rough idea of what you should get.

Thanks everyone. I got £30 as 18 carat scrap gold. I'm happy as I have had a lot of outlays and the small amount of money cheered me up.
