Which Modem to buy?

I may change my broadband to Metronet as they seem to be a good price and many people on here have said they seem to be a good company too. However, this means I have to buy my own modem. Can anyone suggest a good one to buy at a reasonable price? Ive no idea which ones are good and which are not.
Also, do Metronet have a waiting list? Will I order their service and wait a month or will they be able to do it straight away?

Check their website for ordering lead time, they will tell you approximately how long it would take. I have a few brand new usb adsl modem to clear, so pm'd you.0

a basic usb asdl modem should cost no more than £20. They are £30 at argos, so more expensive. I fyou go for ethernet pay a bit more.
Try dabs.com and ebuyer.
dont forget to buy the filters for each phone point that uses a phone into the socket.0 -

Ethernet? Filters? You see, this is why I think I'll just go with Bt! Will ordinary coffee filters do the job?

Do you already have ADSL/broadband?
If so, with which ISP0 -

just now signed a mate up for metronet, was told
that due to demand there is a slight delay, Usually takes 5 days to connect, may take 7-10 days.
just get an usb modem, under £20 from ebuyer or computer fair.
also need a filter for each telephone (this just plugs in, between phone and socket) about £2 each
please do not go down the BT route0 -

I would really encourage anyone going with broadband to go for a router with a firewall. There are a number of other threads in here (with good links) that detail the risks and the need for good internet security.
Just a comment, take it or leave it , your choice

I am with Ntl at the moment. Im changing my phone line to Bt (hopefully they won't charge £75) and then want to go with Metronet or other good value broadband provider.0 -
Cloud Dog is totally correct, for around 65 quid I think these days you can get a router, so have a hard firewall which is very desirable for security
Also the whole thing just runs way quicker. My website has lots of info and photos from various Greek and Canary Islands esp. about walking. My profile has the site address cos not allowed to put it here.0 -

is that with NTL broadband? Or i take it that you are new to broadband?
Depends on how much you are willing to pay. When i was new to broadband, i just went for a low cost basic modem, that was USB connection to my pc. Does the job, and use Zonealarm for a firewall - free to download.
I have used dabs without any problems in the past. Other places are ebuyer and dslwarehouse.
link to dsl warehouse which has some info on what you need etc.
