Kefir making for good health and good bread!

I've started a new thread as the other one I started has got a bit long now and I notice that a lot of the info on there is now out of date.

I killed my kefir a while back but I've got more now and I dont know how I managed without it!

As soon as I started on it again I found the old 'colon cleansing' properties of it were still there and active. I find that within an hour or so of drinking kefir I am off to the toilet.

Its much easier to do than yoghurt, simply chuck the grains into milk for a day and then take them out, put them into a new glass of milk and drink the first glass. No need to worry about heating milk or anything.

Its much better for you than yoghurt as it has millions more good bacteria.

I love using it in bread making. It makes lovely high fluffy loaves. I made a couple of wholemeal kefir breads at the weekend and they were delicious! http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i119/cooip/kefirbread.jpg

Has anyone else found good benefits through drinking kefir milk?

Hi,I had never heard of kefir until today, its sounds amazing.I have just ordered some and cant wait for it to arrive.Your bread looks great,I dont use my bread machine a lot,but our local supermarket has been reducing bread to 10p a loaf and I have been filling the freezer up with it.
I like the idea of using it in bread and drinks, have you posted your bread recipe anywhere on this site? thanks.

Aww Frosty you've ordered some? I give it away for the price of a SAE on my blog!

It is good stuff.... disgusting warning here....... On the first morning I used it I went to the toilet three times. I felt like someone had shoved a vacuum cleaner in my colon and scrubbed me out!

I havent posted my recipe but I can do. I actually just used the dough recipe for my panasonic and used less salt and yeast and replaced half the water with kefir milk.

It rises very well and the dough feels really springy in your hands. I was quite rough with the dough and flattened it right down before shaping it and it still sprang back with a vengeance!
  • Only just read about Kefir....sounds amazing stuff....would love to give it a go. Will check out your blog Angelina-M ;)

Aww dont worry, I dont mean it hurt or anything. I didnt have to rush to the loo, I just had to visit three times in the space of the morning. I was very surprised that I needed to go that many times. I'm not constipated or anything and I 'go' regulary so there's no issue with blockage. I think it just cleanses your system. I certainly felt lighter.

I bet it would be fab to use it as part of a detox system. I do feel cleaner inside.

    Hi,Angelina,

I too had never heard of kefir,I would be really interested in trying it.I do suffer from bloating quite a lot, although I am never constipated and always ' go' regular as clockwork every morning.

I already eat organic veg and buy organic milk,I am vegetarian and have just changed to natural skincare products because I have become increasingly concerned about the chemicals I am putting on my skin.I don't think I would go as far as making my own soaps as you do,but I try to buy as many natural products as I can.

Off to check out your blog.

Annie if you arent interested in soapmaking, have you thought of using oils as a facial cleanser? Plain old Virgin Olive Oil is good. You simply massage into your face and then remove with a flanned soaked in warm water. It removes all makeup even mascara.... and most people have VOO in their cupboard. Just remember not to use a lot, just a little on your fingertips.

Have you had a look at the forums on handbag.com? There are a few natural beauty forums on there that you may be interested in.

Oh My Gosh! I remember Kefir now lol When I was quite young back when we were living in W. africa I remember someone giving my mom some yeast culture to grow. He said it had huge health benefits, amongst others, for HBP which my mom suffered from.
It was greyish white, almost fleshy/meaty..the best way to describe the thicker ones would be the top skin of fresh pork. But from what I am reading I believe it was the water Kefir we had. We kept it in a bucket where it was covered and left to multiply. If my memory serves me well we used to make a big bucket of tea mixed with sugar then put the kefir inside and leave it to ferment. Just a tiny 'flakey-amount' would soon grow into a mass that had to be washed, separated and put into new buckets. The juice would be put into bottles and left in the fridge. Twas quite a refreshing drink. If we didnt separate it it would grow into a huge mass and hard to separate and the juice would taste too sharp to drink. It was such a tiresome job doing this every other week or so that after a while we left it then finally chucked it away.

Dam that was some serious deja vu lol. Thanks for putting this up. Atleast now I know the name of what my mom used to get me to drink sooo many years ago :)

I don't really know anything about this but I have read about them. What you describe sounds more like kombucha than kefir.
