credit cards making me suicidal

  • just had a thought re Northern Rock, have you tried to re mortgage with them? We did this when our fixed rate ended and after looking at others decided we were better off with them at the time. Other options are mortgage brokers who may get you a differnt mortgage product but you would probably need to look at the mortgage board for info on that.

Please do speak to the CAB as they do have the power to get your debts frozen. Be honest with them and tell them how desperate you are feeling.

I was in a lot of debt about 8 years ago and went for a LOB card and managed to clear my debts within about 4 years.

I agree about re-mortgaging with Northern Rock. They must have a better rate than the one you're on and any fees could be added to the mortgage.

Take it one step at a time. At least you're now back at work and so earning again, which will help even though it doesn't seem that way at the moment.
  • I agree with boredofbeingathome that you should try the debt free wannabe board. The board focuses a lot on credit card deals etc but not all of us have a lot of experience in managing debt. However that's exactly what the debt free wannabe board is for. Have a look at some of the other posts till you see the layout for a Statement of Affairs (SOA) - if you post one people will help you try to cut down on your spending in order to make more payments towards your debt. Here's the link

I do also think it might be worth having a look on the CCCS website www.cccs.co.uk - they are a charity specifially devoted to debt management and have a lot of online resources that hopefully will help you.

I do think too that you should talk to your family about this. If you're feeling as low as you say then you deserve their support (and need it) and I'm sure they would feel terrible if they knew you were struggling alone.

    Lots of luck

    Hi Confused,
How are you tonight, I hope you are feeling a bit more positive.
As I said earlier, see what stuff you can clear out and sell on ebay. It really gives you a buzz when someone makes a bid.
If you need any help on setting an account up, then I will help you.

    Hi there

Can I also suggest that you post on the Debt Free Wannabe Board? They are a terrific bunch who will give you invaluable advice on how to make savings elsewhere to help sort this out. Many have been where you are, with no family to tell, and will be able to offer some amazing support, as well as the people on this forum.

I hope you feel a bit better.

I know it's trite, and easy to say, but it's only money. Your family would rather have you any day over a good credit report, so don't let it become more than it needs to.

' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".
  • :o Dear all, a million thanks for all your support and advice. I'm still here and still going. I think the depression reached (hopefully) it's lowest point. I'm still up to my neck in debt but I'm more action orientated now.

I met with CAB and have forms to fill in and when I meet with them again they'll contact the card companies and ask them to freeze the interest rates. I applied for two LOB cards, unfortunately one provider has come back refused, but I spoke to them and they suggested if I write with proof of income etc they will reconsider.

I also spoke with the Woolwich, one of the companies I tried to remortgage with but they've refused. They also said if I wait a few weeks and reapplied they'd reconsider (no promises). The problem is because I've just started work again it's the worst time for me to be applying.

I also wrote to the cards myself, didnt' say I was having problems, but asked them to reduce interest rates. Let's see what they say.

I've emptied the cupboards and am going to start putting stuff on ebay this weekend, every bit helps and it is action which keeps the spirits up :o)

I also want to give my support to everyone else out there struggling, I realise I'm not the only one and I think we should all stick together, suffering alone isn't the answer.

    Thanks again,
    xxxxx
  • I'm glad you are feeling better and it looks like you are taking positive steps to sort this out. Best of luck to you and money isn't worth taking your life over. One day you will look back on this being a blip in your life. xx

    Hi

I am in the same situation.

Does anyone know 1st hand, what actually happens if you start telling the card companies that you cant pay them ?

I went to CAB , but was basically told I wouldn't get any help until I defaulted.
