  • Sorry me again, just wanted to thanks for the post about seeing it from the kids point of view, them having everything then it all being gone. Interesting, they are very young but i know what you mean. I think i've forgotton about how the kids feel about the saving money but ultimately i'm doing it for them. My little boy wants a ds as all his friend have one but £100 thats just soooo exspensive.

  • Can I join in the guilt trip. I went out last Friday with some friends. The meal was very cheap a chines buffet for £4.99 but then a couple of drinks, a share of the petrol and parking and I spent £15. I am trying not to feel guilty as it is my first outing since before christmas. And I enjoyed it too. And I did work 5 days overtime last month. (trying to justify it to myself)

But keeping up with the jones's is part of what got us where we are & I think they really are learning the value of money & appreciate any treats, as I do.

Blimey if I kept up with the Jones's I'd be skint in about a day! I live in Wales ! :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

The way you need to look at this is like so:

I am assuming from your postings that you have a young(ish) family. Now as adults, our debts are our problem. The kids didnt make the decision to get us into debt yet they end up missing out on things when the belt needs to be tightened a few notches. Now if you imiagine yourself in their shoes (and sorry if i am sounding like a guilt trip, that is honestly not my intention here, just attempting, albeit badly to explain my line of thought) You feel deprived and see your friends having all the things you used to be used to, that hurts a bit. You don't understand the whys and wherefores behind the debts, all you know is that you don't get the things you used to.

Yes, and no. Children need to understand the financial realities of family life - they are unlikely to be the richest kids they know, and growing up, will have friends who go ski-ing / have very expensive bikes / computers etc, debt or no.

But I also think that it's a mistake to bring children up to see KFC-type food as a "treat". I can absolutely honestly say I never, ever had KFC, McDonalds or Burger King once as a child, my mother loathed the whole idea. And I wasn't deprived (-:
...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.
  • neverdespair girl Are you left handed? Odd question, it was just because of the way you did this (-: (my lefty husband does things which look that way round too)
  • No, it's just the way I type it when I don't think about it!

Thanks for that, yes i suppose it's not good letting them think meals like this are a treat but compaired to my cooking it probably is, i know exactly what you mean. My mums always drowning them in chocolate and sweets and i 'm always saying can you not buy them a little book or car which you can get for the same price from tescos or other large retailers.

We had a large sale on ebay last night so we have some money to survive for now anyway and for the record we won't be spending it on KFC.
