If you're syncing at aronud 8000kbps, you should expect a bit higher than 1200kbps.

Smickan, can you post the connection speed, line attenuation an noise margin dB readings your router is showing for the connection? Only need the downstream one.

I can if you can please tell me where to find that/do it/what it might be under :o Sorry and thank you!

Chunter - thanks for your help, I've done the speedtest and we have:

The speed test has completed on test server test.speedtester.bt.com for user *********** and you have downloaded a 1.7Mb file at a speed of

1350 kilo bits per second (Kbps), your service bandwidth will have been quoted to you in kilo bits per second.

Your IP address is **.***.***.***, your browser is reported as being Mozilla 5.0 and is running on Windows NT 6.0.

BT would regard the speed ranges shown below as normal service:

    For 250kbps End Users speeds between 50 - 250kbps.
    For 500kbps End Users speeds between 100 - 500kbps.
    For 1000kbps End Users speeds between 200 - 1000kbps.
    For 2000kbps End Users speeds between 400 - 2000kbps.

You may now disconnect from the speed test account (click 'disconnect' in your internet connection window) and if you wish to regain normal access to the internet please re-connect to your ISP using your usual username and password.

Please note that test results may vary according to varying traffic in the network. If you continue to experience slower throughput when logged in to your ISP, this may be due to a slow internet site or high traffic levels beyond the BT Wholesale Network. Please report this situation to your ISP's helpdesk.

:( Hillfy, thanks for sharing! I really hope it gets better for you too!

As are IDNet, even better than Zen according to user feedback at ThinkBroadband.com.

We did consider going with Zen but didn't want to pay £35 (another reason we're changing provider - finances are getting tight) as mum has a musicpal internet radio that she has on for a long time and we needed a higher bandwith than their £25 one would give us.

I am with Sky broadband, just the basic 2Mb service, but it runs consistently at 1.7 Mb and it's reliable. I'm happy with it.

What router are you using? On a Netgear, you log into the router, click Router Status on the left then Show Statistics and a popup window will appear.

Even so, you should only get low speeds at peak times. Outside of that, you've got a problem.

Ours is a 3com, I'm not entirely happy with that either but I don't know if it's just me afixing blame to it.

In the next few days we should have a netgear one sent from sky.

I think this is what you mean... :)

Well I'm with Sky, and it generally works fine. (BT as well, exchange is oversubscribed..)
I wouldn't trust the thinkbroadband speedtest too much. It might be their server is not that close to where you are.

    Thinkbroadband results:
    Date 06/02/08 17:45:26 Speed Down 2970.03 Kbps ( 2.9 Mbps ) Speed Up 376.04 Kbps ( 0.4 Mbps )
    Speedtest.net results:
