Oooh random (and slightly weird) question...when walking up on the moors this morning Shadow found a rams skeleton, I bought the skull & horns home (they have been picked clean so no flesh/slimy bits etc) I thought it would look quite good up on the wall.
I found a horse skeleton last time I went on the moors but alas no skull.
Now my question...when they say to bleach the bones, does that just mean to put it in bleach?
weirder still is that I know this.
Buy a bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide from your local salon supplies (the stuff that's used to bleach hair) or chemist, dilute it down with water in a container large enough to submerge the whole skull in. Once it stops bubbling, remove it, rinse it and allow to dry. It can be repeated until you get it how you like.
Do not use chlorine bleach, it breaks down the bone and just ruins it.. can't remember exactly why....
Then use spray polyurethane laquer or mix PVA and water and paint on.
You don't have to bleach it if you like it's natural colour, but it's safer to give it a dunk in very dilute Hydrogen peroxide/water mix to clean it and get rid of smells. Also some diseases can linger on bone, very very rare, but it can happen.
Now, I have a jar of nutella and I aint sharing!
I still have living room and kitchen to do too.
Horseshoes has been scrubbed a bit though, it's looking good.0 -

LOL, of course not! Thanks for making me smile. You too pigpen. Have decided on cranberry and walnut brownies. That will wait til tomorrow now as I dont have any eggs in the house. Kinda weird not having anything to do and DD is at her Dads. So have managed to do loads of stuff.
Toria - I'm sorry, I've missed your news, so big hugs to you. Thank you for your kind thoughts when you've got stuff going on xx
Tia - why would you need to know how to bleach bones as a vet nurse?
and did you become one or do a lot of research and then decide you didnt want to??? 0 -

Oooh thanks
I mainly wanted to do it to make sure it was clean, I like the colour of the horns (kinda yellowy-brown) will it change the colour? Or just use very dilute? The horns might just be ok with a rinse thru, they look pretty clean. Also...do you need to use laquer/pva? I know bones can go crumbly when dry, does it stop this?uhm.. uhm...

Any reason vets need to bleach bones?
:D
The dishes are done, fish are clean and fed, now going to put a trout in the oven for dinner

Oh bums, bums, bums and more.. lost post. Hugs to maralum, SSL and Torianut. Raphael, second what Tia says, don't use household bleach. I only know how to get it to the bare bone stage (lidded bucket and let the flies do the rest) I'll ask the guy at work tomorrow before you buy any Hydrogen peroxide. (work in a large animal post mortem place by the way and sometimes get 'exotics'. Haven't really got hitch hikers under my floorboards)
