toshiba dvd player only black & white picture

Hi there we have a toshiba dvd player/video recorder, it has been fine up till today, now when we switch via the handset to dvd, the screen is in black and white (usually blue background) and the dvd's will only play in black and white, these are dvd's we have watched a couple of days ago so we know they are ok, the tv is fine and the video recorder plays/records fine? can't figure out what to do next...help!
my suggestion of a good thump on the top has not gone down well with my OH
any other suggestions???

sometimes a faulty scart cable can make the picture black and white.
