There’s the very remote possibility that cynicalmiss has some very old equipment – an old hub and old PCMCIA (PC Card) network card connected with a 10BASE2 cable.

This is a techie board, not an archaeology board. :D (although you'd be surprised, or maybe not, at how much electronic lab test equipment still use such connections etc, talk about a nightmare getting interface cards for replacement PCs)

Dont these cables have little plastic tabs that you must press to get them out? Maybe you need also to press the little tab when trying to get it in the socket too?
  • Thank you all very much for replying to my question.

By chance my sister had a cable she wasn't using.... interestingly enough it didn't fit her Acer laptop but fits my Vaio....all's well that ends well

Also I do know the difference between a usb port and an ethernet/modem port.....

    Again thank you all.....:T

I did say "don't be offended", more than once I've seen a thread prolonged because of an assumption about a problem, with no one asking a basic question.
    Move along, nothing to see.
  • To be quite truthful I'm not sure which cable it is RJ45 or RJ-11....it does have moulded ends and has TYPE CM 24AWG 75*C C(UL) E201854-B....CAT.5 UTP PATCH written on it.....I'm sure that means something to someone out there...

and no offense taken re usb /ethernet....:D

    CAT.5 UTP PATCH
That'll be an ethernet (rj45) cable.
Patch refers to the fact it is a straightforward cable for connecting 2 components.

for easiness the RJ11 cable is what is on the end of your telephone that goes into the telephone socket the smallest one...the RJ45 (ethernet cable) cable is bigger and come's in catagories cat 5 is widely used but you can get cat 6 cat 7 cables just means there more expensive cos there suppose to be better quality...:Dhope that helps anyone...:D
