ethernet cable ?

Hi

This may seem like a strange question but I have to ask 'cos I'm confused ??

The ethernet cable I have been using to surf the 'world wide web' is now to big to fit in to the back of my new laptop. Both laptops, previous and new, are Sony Vaio's. I thought ethernet cables and network ports on comps were universal. Obviously not.
In essence I have a cable that won't allow me to connect to the web. Is there a particular ethernet cable I need to buy...? Bearing in mind that it also has to fit my broadband modem.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated....btw the model is vaio BX51XP.

seems it has a standard RJ45 connection on the back, left side if looking from the back so it should fit

it sounds to me that you have a RJ45 cable but the connection on your lappy is a RJ11 modem port RJ11 is what normal phone cables are like ...is your lappy WLAN if so just seach for your BB and hook up wirelessly... :D

    99% will have a rj445 port.
all modern lappys certainly will have, and wireless too.

Page 17 of the manual shows rj11 and rj45 connections.
Don't be offended, but are you sure you have an ethernet cable and not USB?
    Move along, nothing to see.

There’s the very remote possibility that cynicalmiss has some very old equipment – an old hub and old PCMCIA (PC Card) network card connected with a 10BASE2 cable.

Ignoring that, I’d guess that it’s just a very tight socket on the new BX51XP. I’ve had an RJ45 connector slide easily out of an old loose socket, only to have to force it hard into a new socket. Getting it out later was even harder, and why you really need cables with moulded ends. If you’re not 100% confident that you’re pushing the right plug into the right socket, you might not push hard enough.
