What's the name of the big boss at the post office? if everyone in the country sends him a postcard with no stamp on the same day he'll soon change his mind about the charge.

But why should the recipient have to pay a fee for the sender's mistake?

Ok valid point. However if there is not senders address on the outside or inside of the item how would they be able to surcharge the sender.

you can weigh item and check the royal mail price calculator so you don't, as a sender get caught like this. I guess if the item has not enough postage on it, then you could ask the sender for the extra money.

A friend on mine works for RM in customer service and said they receive calls from Joe public complaining there is a surcharge to pay and point out the under payment is say 5p and the caller has said RM should use their commence sense. However has anyone gone into a supermarket and went to pay to find they are 5p short. Do you think the cashier would say forget it. Personally I dont so.

    Good point!

OTOH, neither does the supermarket hold on to the whole basket of shopping until you can give them an extra £1.

i have actually gone to the post office to get them to send something for me and they have still put the wrong postage on it, and on occasion managed to lose it.
  • i would refuse to accept any underpaid item- get them to send it back (and wait for sender to pay up instead!)

its been about 18 months now.
if people are too lax to bother checking the cost then i say take the consequences.
yes the recipient can whine about it but its either pay up or refuse the item.
s for it being a complex system it really ist if people take the time to learn it.

considering underpaid items need ot be removed from the mail stream and are handled seperatly then im sure the £1 fee is representitive of the costs.
remember a 1st class stamp doesnt cover the costs of delivery of most letters.
its also £1 regardless of underpaid postage.
ive even seen SD items with no postage paid!

if an item was weighed at a PO then obviously there is grounds to reclaim the charge.

as for sending an underpaid card to crosier/leighton then thats pointless.
rm doesnt charge other parts of RM!
  • The only time I've ever had to pay was when I got a letter from the head office of my previous charge to tell me the probabtion period of my promotion was now over. The frank machine hadn't worked on the letter. I showed it and my reciept from the post office to my area manager and she refunded the money.

Sorry for dredging up a thread, but I am a little annoyed....

This morning I had a card left requiring me to pay £1.06p for a letter to be delivered. 6p is the underpaid charge, £1 is the admin fee and while I do not mind paying the fee for postage, I do take kindly to something which should be delivered to me being held hostage.

Now from my travels, I was under the impression that interfering with the delivery of mail (ie adding an artificial delay) was illegal and that Royal Mail have a duty to give the mail to the sender whether postage is paid or not. If anyone can confirm/dispel this (especially with reference to acts or case law) it would be greatly appreciated.
