best camera for 100 pounds??

can anyone help advise me on the best camera for 100 pounds please?

id like it to be able to shoot reasonable quality movies as well as pictures, but id like to know what kinda of camera is best for this kind of thing, as i dont want to get a camcorder.

i dont mind paying 20 pound ontop for a larger memory card so i could increase the size of the movies

is the camera mentioned in the original post (S5700) good for this kind of thing as well as taking pictures?

im a novice user, so id like it to be easy to use for myself and parents etc, although it doesnt have to be idiot proof!! lol

thanks for all you help in advance

    I bought my Mum (77 years young!) a Kodak V1253, http://www.kodak.com/eknec/PageQuerier.jhtml?pq-path=9/11920/31&pq-locale=en_GB

Slightly above your budget but pretty good spec & she loves the HD video.

How long do you need your movies to be? You can get about 15 mins at 640x480/30fps on a 1Gb xd card, just under 30 mins on a 2Gb xd card.

I can recommend Fuji cameras, excellent sensor and sturdy. Do you want one that looks like an SLR or a compact? The S5700 should be good enough, and you can make it as easy (auto setting P&S) or as difficult as you like (manual setting for when you get adventurous) :D

https://www.fujifilm.co.uk have the S5700 (refurbished) for £84.99 which sounds like a bargain to me. It comes with a 6 month guarantee, but you can buy an extended guarantee (Superwarranty) which also covers accidental damage increasing the guarantee to 2 years for just £16.50, or 3 years for £24.

I'm on my third Fuji, my newest is the S9600 which I love and was bought from Fuji as a refurb.
  • Hi, Jessops have a sale on at the moment, with a few cameras within your
budget. Whats best is, for you to decide, take a look at your photographic priorities and what you want to do with them.

Take a look at this Fuji camera that I bought recently. It has good reviews, and I'm well pleased with it. It uses standard low cost SD cards. Example review here

    Cheers from Mike :)

well guys basically i never did get my camera, i had some problems with cash...

but now i do have a spare £100 and as its been over 4 months since i first asked the question, i thought there might be some more bargains to be had??

    any suggestions please?

    thanks
  • I'd recommend the Samsung NV5, it's lens bulkiness may not be entirely practical but you get a lot of zoom for your money and it's given me some good shots.. The model up (NV7) may be under 100 quid by now as well..

    thanks mate

    samsung's take good movie's too?

how much memory do u think il need to take a few hundred pics? whilst also being able to shoot 3 or 4, 15 minute movies (basically what we all do on holiday!?)
  • The movie quality is excellent, the only problem is sound cuts on when zooming in or out (which ruined a lot of concert movies for me) but otherwise excellent.

And it really depends on image size/quality, (it can do from 1MP to 7MP quality pictures and several framerates/sizes for videos) so depending on the setting would depend on what you need. At an estimate, my 2GB card holds about 150 pictures on highest quality...

If you are planning on taking movies then look at the Samsung & Casios why , because they use MPEG4 compression which means you can get loads of video on your card, the Casios are using the very latest version (H.264)which is 1.5 times more than normal MPEG4 , to put it into perspective a normal camera may shoot about 10 mins on a 1gb card the Casios will shoot 1.5 hours !

The one below is £99 with a free 2gb card (cheapest is £130 without card elsewhere) , it has umpteen features and good video mode

I bought this camera based on reviews, and I'm very dissappointed with it, the pics are far too dark and are not sharp or clear, and believe it or not my old 4 million pixel camera is far better
