    To qualify for SSP you must have a PIW (period of incapacity to work ) and this is four consecutive days during which you are sick and no work is done. These four days can be qualifying or non qualifying days. If the gap between PIWs is 56 days or less then they are linked and counted as one PIW. So if qualifying days were Monday to Friday and non qualifying days were Saturday and Sunday, then if someone was sick from Wednesday to Sunday, they have a PIW and if it linked with a previous PIW during which the waiting days had been served then SSP would be due from Wednesday to Friday at three fifths of the weekly rate £43.53.
    Also this would not count as a full week of SSP as in this case only three days were paid and with a 5 day qualifying week you have to be paid 5 days for it to count as a week off you 28 weeks.

    As to the original question I do not know the answer, that is why I suggested the help line for the employer as I always found then very helpful when I used to do payroll, so what follows is only opinion.

    This sort of situation must have arisen before with people needing treatment that would mean they could not work for a day or two on a regular basis but could do some light work between.
    The rules of SSP put most of the responsibility of deciding if someone is sick or not onto the employer.
    I have not seen anything saying that you can or that you cannot do this.
    Doing it does fit in with the rules of SSP by linking PIWs.
    So my opinion is that it would be fine to work for a couple of days and be sick the rest of the week, assuming that you were fit enough to work the two days and were to sick to work the rest of the week.
    But would just repeat it is only my opinion and should be checked by the employer with the employer helpline.

    You are right to trust CAB and charity advisers before people on a forum. No advice on here is guaranteed and Martin suggests that people do their own research too. CAB have stringent systems to ensure they give correct information and if they don't come up to standard they are not allowed to call themselves CABx. The charity you refer to probably has similar rules about giving advice.

    I'm sorry you've had unsubstantiated advice with no proof thrust upon you and rude responses in this thread.
