but is the area of the bar still the same?

Volume, not area. You're dealing with a 3 dimensional object. They could decrease one area and increase another. The important thing is whether the volume has increased (and/or weight/mass). ;)

Gone are the days when Yorkie Bars could break your teeth, and toblerone's could stab the roof of your mouth to shreds. They should have called it the new "heavier" bar, and increased the ratio of that for us.

  • Simple. By decreasing the density. As has already been suggested just by simply changing the ingredient mixture/ratio.

Yes, I see this... maybe what I should have said is that I can't believe they would actually go to the trouble of increasing the volume without increasing the weight simply so they can put "bigger" on the packaging for 3 months. Maybe I am missing something, but surely it would be easier and safer for them to just increase the weight by half a gram... ?!

May be it all depends on the price of the ingredients – how are the cocoa crops doing?

To keep the price the same they may have had to tweak the ingredient ratio, less chocolate, more nuts or something.

To get the new ingredient ratio to be the same weight they’d have to change the volume.

So if say cocoa has gone up in price they might want to use less chocolate and replace it with nuts.

If nuts are lighter, to keep the weight the same the nuts replacing the chocolate would take up more room so the size of the bar would increase.

If they took out some of the nuts, and replaced them with chocolate it would be possible to have a smaller heavier bar, so you can’t just judge it on size or weight alone – may be it’s the density that matters – mass / volume

Long and thin goes too far in and doesn't please the ladies. Short and thick does tha trick and manufactures babies.

Hold on, you're talking about a Snickers...

They all do it, not so long ago i bought some skittles with "new bigger pack size" written on the side. What this actually meant was that they had made the packaging bigger!!!

Also anyone seen those sweets you used to get when you were kids and they're still 10p? Yes, they're still 10p but the sweets have shrunk in size and the pack is now smaller.
