A cubic metre of chocolate weighs more than a cubic metre of peanut or nougat. So the bar may be bigger because it contains more of the lighter ingredients, but less of the heaver items.

Very good point. BUT... even if that were the case, they have to consider how most reasonable people would interpret the words "bigger bar". My hunch is that the vast majority of reasonable people would think "bigger bar" means increased in weight.

Otherwise I'm sure companies could find ways of puffing up products by putting more air in the mixture and calling it "bigger".

What also surprises me is the lack of any statistics on the packaging to support the bold claim. I thought it was compulsory by law to support any claims - for example when a product says "25% EXTRA FREE" - there is also meant to be some text that says "500g for the price of 400g".

I'm thought Mars Masterfoods would be more careful, after all the bad PR from the recent Vegetarian scandal which affected Snickers.

If it were the case then they could make it larger overall rather than tweaking the dimensions. As I said the volume would have to have increased but by the sounds of things they've simply made it longer at the expense of the other dimensions.

  • couldn't resist adding to this thread .... chocolate - favourite subject!!

anyway, recently bought a mars bar (which is essentially a snickers minus the nuts) for first time in years and years - noticed the chocolate coating was very very thin - almost non-existant compared to years ago.
    Very disappointing.
And talking of marathons (someone is showing their age!) does anyone remember Aztecs? I think they were similar to a mars bar but I can't think what the difference was.
These days I tend to buy chocolate without bits and pieces added. Nuts and stuff is a waste of valuable chocolate 'space' !!!!

I'm still trying to get over Mars removing the cardboard tray in Bounty bars, that was used to protect the the two separate bars in each pack.

Wow things really have changed. Don't think I've bought any chocolate bar in years.

Aztec was a bit like a Mars bar but with raisins or something similar in it.
Whilst we are on the subject of chocolate bygones, anyone remember Summit bars? Mars bar lookalike on the ouside with soft nougat and bits of cherry and other fruit in it.

As for the waste of space bit, spot on with that unless it's replaced with caramel.

As for Mars bars, Lidl do a lookalike that IMHO tastes better, and it's cheaper. German chocolate with nicer tasting caramel. Damn, they're shut until the morning and I'm out of them.

... so they may have tweaked the ratio of chocolate, nuts and nougat to give an increase in volume but the weight remains the same.

Mars have stated they've increased the height, the width and length may be unaltered, so the volume is bigger.
