Any refund other than reversing the original transaction in paypal will cost him his transaction fee, so there is no sense to it that I can see as it will cost him money!
If I have to give a refund for any reason, I don't need the customer's card details to do it, I simply go into my merchant account online and find the original transaction, which has a reference number, but not the full card number. Paypal is even easier to refund on.
It sounds highly suspect to me.

We would only need the customer's card to refund them, if they walk into our premises & purchased in person using the chip & pin terminal & then brought it back for a refund.

It is odd how some retailers are less than savvy with their own money. This thread reminds me of an incident that happened only last month. I had spent £485 on glasses at Optical Express, they were completely unable to make the prescription up correctly and after three attempts and several weeks they agreed I could have a full refund. I had paid on a credit card and handed the card over for a refund, but they said they had to do it by cheque..and they stuck by that. Very odd.

To all above...i worked in many a restaurant..its very easy to get ALL your card details as you hand over your cards to pay everyday...here's how

    you hand over card..
i put it in chip pin mc
    you do your number privately
i pull out card, signature strip facing me..where i can see your last 3 digits
i turn it over and check your name whilst getting receipt from till
i hand over your card with a smile!!:D

When you have gone i have your FULL card number on receipt in till, last 3 digits and your full name...
    easy..

NO i havent used it..im honest..but i can see the way its possible. I did it with a fellow staff member to show her how easy it is..
I wouldnt have the guts to order from it though!!!!

the tills where you out the card in mc yourself prevent staff from seeing name and last 3 digits so they are better.
And as Jeremy Clarkson pointed out..every cheque you write has your bank details and sort code on????
TO FINISH LAST, FIRST YOU HAVE TO FINISH....

Yeah, and we had a meal out recently, the hostess said 'oh, the card machine isn't working, give me your card and I'll go and do it manually' - i.e. out of our sight. when i insisted on accompanying her on that trek, she had a face like thunder for the rest of the evening...

Funny how offended people can get at normal prudent financial practice...

yup,at work people hand over all sorts as ID for collections.
lease documents, credit cards, bank statements etc and sometimes hand it over with the red card.
if its me i always push it back to them and say i'll check it when i get the item back.
however someo ff the guys take the ID and go and find the package.now you could be doing anything with those details.yet people never say anything!
