How do I stop Messenger from starting

I have tried everything to try and stop Windows Messenger from starting automatically when I switch on. Anybody any ideas?

I would suggest doing the following:

Stop Windows Messenger from running when Windows starts:

Open Windows Messenger and click Tools menu | Options | Click the Preferences tab.
Remove the tick from the 'Run This Program When Windows Starts' check box and click OK.
Remove the tick from the 'Allow Windows Messaging to run in the background' check box and click OK.
