Presuming you are on XP...........
Start>run.....type in msconfig. Look at the tabs at the top>click startup. Scroll down the list and untick MSN messenger. Click apply then OK. Your computer will restart without messenger. How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

If you have SpyBot( http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html ) installed, you can stop most processes from 'booting up' at start up. Go to the 'Tools' section with SpyBot.0

If you want to remove it you can do so via Add/Remove Programs.
Go into Control Panel > Add/Remove Program. The Select the Add/Remove Windows Components down the left hand side. Go to the bottom of the Window that comes up and it's at the bottom. Just untick it.
Otherwise, if you want to keep it but stop it running, use Spybot as mentioned above."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
if you go to the control panel>Administrative tools>services>scroll down to messenger and right click, select properties. Change the startup type to disabled and if possible click the stop button under service status. click apply then ok.Sometimes i surprise myself by being right.0

But that's for the Messenger Service! Disabling it will have no effect on Windows Messenger.pendlejh wrote:
If you want to stop Windows Messenger from running, you'll find a concise guide on Microsoft's very own website. Additionally, if you find that Windows Messenger starts alongside Outlook Express, you can curb this behaviour too with a quick registry tweak.
In the event that none of the above works, I find that renaming or deleting the Windows Messenger executable (msmsgs.exe) usually does the trick.0
