  • I had already investigated cheaper contact lenses before MSE started this thread. I talked with my regular optician at D&A to explain I could get my annual number of CIBA Day and Night lenses from Coastal direct for £170, compared with £300 from D&A direct (12x monthly pair for £25). I wanted to ask how much an annual eye check would be on top of this. He suggested I rang D&A mail order to see how close they would match...

I did... and they have offered £20 a month instead of £25, and offered to waive two months fees. A saving of £100! ...and I still support my regular optician, with regular checks, 50% off glasses and eye test. Try to support local branches if the price is right IMHO.
  • Hi Misskool I also wear gas permeable lenses and checked out the website you use. Its very expensive in fact twice the price that Asda charges. I always buy mine in supermarkets much cheaper than online or in opticians. Check out Asdas website to compare prices. Also look in other supermarkets when your out shopping.
  • To be fair to them, I have now just received the lenses.
  • HI, I've been using http://www.seconsightonline.co.uk They have been fantastic - no problems at all. They usually send out the lenses within 2-3 days of recieving my order, and send it Special Delivery by Royal mail at no extra charge, delivery is included in the price. Which at the moment is the cheapest on the market at £80 for 3months supply!

Try them out - you'll have no problems. I recommend them.
  • I recomend http://www.secondsightonline.co.uk
They currently have an offer on their 1 day Acuvue lenses at £80 for 3months/£160 for 6months & 315 for a year's supply - cheapest I've seen on the internet. Just fax through the order and you'll have them delivered by special delivery - all delivery for free!

I've been using them for over a year now - they're great.
  • I don't get it - if these companies can sell contacts online, how is it that eBay are being sued for doing the same?

Edit - eBay are being prosecuted for allowing their users to sell contact lenses.

i have been with my opticians for years (specsavers)- . I used to wear monthly (proclear) lenses and paid only £10/month with solutions and check ups. I have just changed to focus daillies and they charge 22/month and thats with check ups and get my specs at half price - only cost me £37 !
Can I ask why and when you changed the type of lenses you wear? I only ask as I was using Specsavers monthly lenses, but at the beginnning of this year I started to have a lot of problems with them. After 1 day they would be clouded and couldn't be cleaned properly. I went to the optician and he checked hem out and said it could just be a duff pair of lenses and replaced them (note: each eye is a different strength). This scenario continued for a few months and it got to the stage were I just couldn't wear them as my eyes got very irritated
I am aware of four other people within my workplace with the same problem I had with Specsavers monthly disposables and the solution in each case has been to move onto the daily disposables (£8 dearer by direct debit).
The Specsavers optician told me it couldn't be their lenses it must be me, so after wearing these lenses problem-free for years I apparently suddenly developed a reaction to them!
I'm now so fed up with Specsavers that last week I got my prescription and cancelled the direct debit to enable me to go elsewhere. I don't know if I just have a poor local branch but the customer service was dreadful too.
I'm going to compare other high street opticians and online before I decide where I go next but any suggestions are welcome.

Just a thought, but as you say other people in your workplace have the same problem I was wondering whether your firm installed air conditioning at the time you started having problems, or if your firm already had air conditioning, whether Specsavers changed the brand of lenses they were giving you to ones which maybe react badly to air conditioning. Personally I use Specsavers and do not have any problem with the air conditioning where I work, but maybe they have different brands of lenses at different branches. Before the firm I worked for moved to the air conditioned offices, one of the things some of the staff were saying about air conditioning was that it could dry out your eyes, so like I said it is just a thought.

Good idea, but nothing in the workplace has changed, also I wasn't at work for approx 8 months (for the first 2 months of this time off my lenses were fine) which is why I only found out about the others 6 months after I started having problems. I am also aware of one other person who is in a totally different part of the country from me with the same issues over their lenses
