Repointing quote

Hi,
I have been quoted £350 to repoint the front wall of my 2 bed terrace house. This includes grinding out of mortar and the replacement of one brick around the doorframe. How does this sound? Is there anything I need to know about repointing? Is it ok to have it done in winter?
The guy has offered to show me his previous work so I will check that out first.
Cheers
Andy

Well he took me to 2 jobs hed done, what can I say, it looked neat. I guess for 3 days work it seems fair enough.0

If you have seen his work as you say.
Then £350 is fine "in my opinion"
There is a range / price band for any given trade.
If he is good at his trade he deserves it.
Hope you found a good un "it sounds like it"0 -

I hope so, not much more I can do really, I found him off the rate a tradesman website, hed only joined recently but has positive reviews. No one else responded to quote, I guess its not the most popular time of year to be up a wall.
Cheers

That seems very cheap-wish I could have got the front of my house repointed for that! I paid £1500 but that did include the hire of scaffolding
2008 will be the year I finally get organised!:o

When I say 2 bed terrace I do mean the smallest type, the front door opens directly into the living room so the house isnt particulairly wide. Its only the front wall Im having done and the guy has his own scaffold tower.0 -
Yes, that sounds reasonable enough. It's best to wait a little longer though, until the frosts are over, as the mortar can crack unless it's well covered up overnight. Spring-to-early Summer is the best time really. High Summer can be too hot (the mortar dries out too quickly unless kept moist), Winter is too cold (and dark). Not sure about Autumn.
I'm going to need a lot of repointing doing this Spring, including a large gable end. If anyone knows anyone reliable in the Yorkshire (Leeds) area, please let me know! I've been putting this off for years...SKIPS STONES FOR FUDGE0 -
if its going to take 3 days then its a very good quote.Get some gorm.0

Thats cheap, wish we could get tradesmen like that here.
As long as the wall is dry when he starts it so he isnt locking any moisture in then its fine."Reaching out to touch the stars dont forget the flowers at your feet".0 -
The quotes we had were really high,I mean many, many, thousands.Hubby has been doing a little bit at a time himself working round from the back of the house so that by the time he gets to the front he is an expert at it and it will be nice and neat.He finished the side last weekend so on to the front next.Theres still an awkward bit that needs done from the neighbours garden too.Its taken 3 years so far.Its a big house."Reaching out to touch the stars dont forget the flowers at your feet".0

I am a Bricklayer the average price for a proper repointing job is about £20 m2.If it is about 3 days work you are getting it cheap, just make sure its done correctly raked out ,brushed out and damped down before pointing. Also H&S regs mean that it has to be done from a scaffold not a ladder, like we used to,to save a few quid0
