do I need an external aerial for cable television?

hope this doesnt sound too silly.

i have just got a new home but there is no aerial at the property.

if I get cable tv (say via virgin or sky), will this require an external aerial to be fitted to get a decent/any picture?

You can't get cable television from Sky so if you go with them you will need a dish.
If you get cable from Virgin then no, you don't need an aerial.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

  • The name cable kinda gives it away that it comes through a cable and not over the air through an aerial.
Also the name Sky kinda gives it away that it comes from the SKy.
Cable and Sky are completely different.

i was using cable/sky in the generic sense, hope that wasnt lost on you theronkinator. i personally do not have a television these days due to the dumb dumb they are dumbing it down on it, but use other forms of entertainment so I have never had sky or cable.

everyone else thanks for the response.

if I have a freeview box do I need to pay a tv licence or is it free to view? :)

Then you WILL need an external aerial.
    Move along, nothing to see.
  • No license as there is no TV, when you get a TV then you will need a license
even if you watch Sky, or play back video tapes.

Freeview box = receiving equipment = licence

If you watch sky, yes. If you watch tapes, no.

A license is needed when you watch or record tv live as it's broadcast. Streaming off the net after it's been shown on tv requires no license. Watching pre-recorded tapes (not tapes you've taped off tv) or dvds (same clause as tapes) requires no licence. Using the TV with a games console requires no license.
They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it

    Wrong.

    From the TV Licensing website:

    Do I need a licence?

You need a TV Licence to use any television receiving equipment such as a TV set, set-top boxes, video or DVD recorders, computers or mobile phones to watch or record TV programmes as they are being shown on TV.
