Jobs To Do In February

It looks lovely out, but it is bitterly cold and the ground is frozen. I couldn't get a spade in. The bits the sun has defrosted are just squelchy mud so you really aren't missing much.'If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need' Marcus Tullius Cicero0

Due to various bugs and ailments going round the house I've ended up taking time off to look after the kids. In a desperate hunt for things to keep DS1 (3) occupied we resorted to getting a blueberry bush and some raspberry canes (one afternoon spent at the garden centre which also has an aquarium section for entertainment value), which we then spent the following afternoon planting. Prior to that I got 6 currant bushes (£1 each in Wilkinsons) which have also been planted - one looks a bit sickly but hopefully it will survive - if not £1 is not the end of the world and I can always get another one!
We won't get anything much from any of them this year but hopefully next summer will see plenty of fruit.
Next jobs are to give the lawns a haircut and start thinking about getting some veg under way - oh and paint the various fences/sheds etc which were clearly neglected before we moved in!Adventure before Dementia!0 -
I braved the weather this morning and laid some paving stones outside my shed, they look lovely but can I say brrrr!!!0

thqanks all for the fantastic tips on here, and ive been inspired to actually take control of the garden thanks to you all, ive been given a greenhouse, yippee, so have planted some seeds (29p in aldi). Bought some fruit bushes and potted them, some fruit trees, still unsure where they are going so i popped them in pts until i decide, we have made some raised beds and hope to raise veg this year and a salad garden, and we have knocked down the old shed, hacked off the rotten bits and out of the useful wood, we made box for the recycling to stop the cats and dogs ripping them apart, and the old wood has gone for the chimnea, and there shouls touch wood be enought left over to make a bike shed!
thanks all again, as you have inspired us no end!
ps can you grow swede or turnips in a raised beds if so any tips on how? hopefully from seeds:A :j0 -

I went for the PLANTHOUSE from strawberryfield.co.uk in the end.
It doesn't have a back though so does need fixing to a wall.0 -
The lawn is getting another cut tomorrow, and time to pot on a few seedlings sown at the start of the month.
My DS has asked for help with his new garden, he has never shown any interest before in gardening but now he has his own he wants to get a veg patch, fish pond, wildlife pond and bog garden in this year!
that should keep him/me busy, at the moment its 50' x 30' of brambles, rubbish, broken fences, fallen trees and a very big hole he started in January for his fish pond!
I have seen 2 bees out this week bit early I thought, anyone else seen any yet?
the ladybirds that nested over winter in my home came out last week, also early I think.0
