Please tell me how these 'cashback' deals work.
Do I still pay Dell or am I sending money to Quidco? If so, how do I know if I can trust quidco? How do I recieve the cashback? Is it a cheque sent to me by Quidco?

The extras are- Floppy Drive £23
- Modem £20
- VAT and Delivery and 1yr on site repair.
Is it still a good deal.? They have offered to double the hard drive to 160Gb in the price. Do I need it?

Well, if they are offering a bigger hard drive for no extra cash, then why not!
Perhaps more useful though would be more memory - that's the only reservation I would have - 512 is kind of a good starting point if you are running Windows XP and I think you would find that your first limitation in the future. To put it in perspective though - the "comp-bunnies" that download and do loads of stuff on their pc's have around 1.5 GB memory plus, so I'm not suggesting a huge upgrade here. They may even throw it in free rather than the hard drive upgrade if you catch a salesman on a good day.
Floppy discs are kind of obsolete now days - easier to buy a USB memory key! But, if you think you might need one, fitting it yourself at a later stage would probably invalidate the warrenty (I think they would have seals on the pc case that if you open it up, the warrenty doesn't count any more - check this though, but that's the norm). I worried when my floppy broke that I would have problems, but 2 years later and not one person has given me a floppy to use since!!
Modem - depends on what you are using now. If you have broadband already and have an external USB modem then DO NOT get an internal one - I thought ooh great idea, I'll have a dial up back up, and after 2 weeks of pc crashing, I figured out that have both the external and internal modems enabled caused this! I've since seen it on 3 more systems that people just couldn't find the cause of crashing! lol. In fact, unless you intend to solely connect using dial up internal modem in the future, I wouldn't bother with that either.
Most warrenties do not cover the TFT screens (they are notorious for going faulty and companies are loath to replace them), so I would doubly check that this is the case. As I've said before, only take the warrenty if you are not going to poke around in the case yourself. All minor problems will have to be fixed via the warrenty, which can be a godsend or a curse, depending on the kind of computer user you are. I would also check what software you get with this - if its Windows XP, do you just get a Dell reinstall disc or do you get the original XP install disk - I believe this makes a difference if you just need to repair Windows at a later stage rather than restore to factory original state. Does it include MS Office? They can be really sneaky on this - saying it does and then providing a version that doesn't have half the programs you want to use!! Worth checking. Other thing to take into consideration is that warrenty repairs are notorious for wiping your hard drive in the course of their repair even if its just for a hardware malfunction - so make sure you have a regular backup system if you do go for the warrenty option (this is of course a good idea anyway
)
Quidco are a cashback site - you sign up with them, click through to the Dell site via their link, order through Dell and pay Dell as normal, but Dell pay Quidco for linking you to them. Quidco then take around 3 months to process and recieve the 4% from Dell, take the first £5 (one off fee for the year) and pay it to your paypal account. If in the next year, you don't earn any cashback through them, they do not charge you £5. They simply take the first £5 of your earnings through them per year. I haven't had my first payment from them yet, but I think it will come through without any problems.
I'd do a google search for Dell, online voucher, coupon, discount, special deal, look on this site, look on r-points website forum and on ukhotdeals.co.uk (i think that's right) to see if anyone has posted about a Dell discount.
Good luck with it!0 -
