Should I buy this Dell ?

I need to buy a new desktop computer and want a 17" flat screen.

I'm an 'oldie' and don't do zapping games and music downloads etc. All I do is a bit of Ebay dealing, write letters etc and a lot of browsing.

Should I buy the following?

Dell Dimension 3000
Intel Celeron 3.05GHz Processor
256MB RAM
80 GB HD
CD-RW/DVD-ROM
17" TFT
90 day collect & return service
£350

Dell are also offering it to me at £444 including 3yr on site warranty. They say £94 for the 3yr on site warranty is needed, as the TFT screens are very expensive and go wrong.

If there is another better hardware package to suit me at around this price; please tell me.

I'm a puter novice and really need the advice - please help.

Thanks - Happy

I have a similar dell computer, for similar use to yourself. It's great, very easy to set up, easy to use, lovely monitor. I wouldn't get the 3 year support thing, as you'll probably find that there are many people in your local area who do computer repair for considerably less than £94. Also, if anything did go wrong with the monitor after a couple of years, a new one wouldn't cost much more.

Yeah, always give their support options the skip, if you can.

If there is anything wrong with the hardware, you have 28 days to have it returned anyway.

i agree, the computer spec should be more then adequate for your need...go for it. The 17inch monitor is lovely and at the moment costs around £150....so in a few years the price will be preety low...forget the 3 year warrenty.

Sounds good, but someone on this forum may get it closer to £300 all in - inc delivery. Try upping the warranty to 1 year on-site - the last time I looked it made about £15 difference.

Don't go for the three year warranty option. If you need a three year warranty upgrade after you've bought. Hard to believe this but it's cheaper and anyway for the amount your paying for that three year warranty the computer you're buying will be worth abit less than that in three years anyway.

Sorry - I didn't say you could get it for £300 - just might - there are people on this forum who have ways and means to sniff out the best bargains.

I've had a quick look at Dell's site, Is it £350 inc delivery and VAT - if so I think it will be worth grabbing - have a quick look at upping the warranty to 1 year on-site if it's say around £20

with using dells site a couple of things I will mention.
1 if you find a good deal save it because very often when you look again the price/spec/free stuff is different. There is an option to save the search on theri site.
    2. If you go for the small buis section they seem to be cheaper than the home section, dont know why but my bro that buys a lot for the company he works at says they usually are.
3 Keep an eye out for any deals on internet sites or in the press sometimes there are good ones.

Thats about all I can think of atm, hope it helps!
