thats it!
900hz is very slow for a 3 year old computer.
Mine is 4 years old and runs at minimum of 1650mhz .
Sometimes the bios can reset itself to default giving the wrong settings and slowing things down. I wonder if this is what has happened here.
you might be able to find out the motherboard make by going into 'start','all programmes','accessories','system tools' and clicking on 'system information'. That should bring up a box and fill it with your computer specification.
look under system manufacturer (write down name of motherboard maker)and system model(write down number of motherboard) and that should be it.That information together with your processor type and speed should enable you to google for info on what memory you need and how to reset the bios if you need to.
The memory is tiny. You really do need to put more in.
Crucial looks like a good site but I havent used it myself.0 -

When running Kaspersky the pc has closed down & rebooted itself several times if I'm doing anything else, like looking for system thingy or whatever, so have given up on it for the mo. It's only got as far as scanning memory since 3.30am!
I've taken on board all the advice everybody has given and if/when Kaspersky ever finishes I'll also try the other suggestions, many thanks for those.
Now I'm going to have to close this so I can let Kaspersky have the limelight, I'll report back how it went, probably in a week or so at this rate....
Thankyou again0 -

You could do with another 256Meg of ram, but need to check you haven't got any malware lurking first, update the signature after you install, then scanEver get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -

I'm a bit slow (like the pc) you mean instead of Kaspersky? It can't be worse!0 -

just a thought, should I not uninstall kaspersky before installing another programme, or the pc is going to get very confused!0 -
I am assuming you are running the online kaspersky scanner, if so, it isn't installed as such, it is just an activex scanner running inside IE.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

I just clicked on free virus scanner, but it is now in my 'add/remove programmes' file. However I'll give bitdefender a go and hope it doesn't take as long..0 -
If it still struggles, install it, update it, then go into safe mode (F8 at boot), and do a scan.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

I really must get a life, I'm all excited because bitdefender has reached 19% in less than 20 mins!0 -

yes aardvarkuk, I only have the one. I'm guessing you're thinking i shouldn't be running other programmes at the same time? I wondered if it didn't make any difference as the Kaspersky I left running at 3.30am was only about 27% when I got up at 9am.
Here is the result of the Bitdefender scan -
