I used to love Kippers, but had them again recently and they didnt seem to go down well:confused: ...they were the boil in bag ones though with the butter knob in them.

I have the fillets before and they are lovely, somay try them again. I used to cook them with a little butter in the pan and have with a soft fried egg and toast...and of cours a cup of tea!!

With kippers it has to be the real thing! Discard your boil-in-the-bag with butter, and even your individual fillets and go for the whole smoked fish 'on the hoof' as it were. Alas a kipper is one of the few fish where the dyed version is miles better than the undyed so pick the dark brown ones every time. Just grill (no butter or fat) until the edges and head are crispy and serve, pour any juice in the grill pan back over the kippers and add a wedge of lemon (also a grilled tomato is great, as already suggested). Traditionally one would have a pair of kippers as a meal.

Fantastic, and they're cheap too. I'd rate them alongside oysters as my two favourite foods. Craster kippers are available from Waitrose, and many other outlets and they're always excellent.

I always add some grilled mushrooms along with the grilled toms

I do cheat a bit as I use boil in bag but take them out & grill them instead, either discard butter knob or use to top the mushrooms whilst grilling

  • Whilst on the subject, I have to mention the (IMHO) king of hot smoked fish, the Arbroath Smokie.

  • The only way I will eat Kippers is in Kedigree, oooo I fancy some now!

Google it for a recipe, it really is delicious at any time of the day & very filling.

Oooh I love kippers -the rest of my family don't like the little bones though -I tell them to shut up and eat them;)

Why do supermarkets insist on calling the m 'smoked kippers' though ? It aint a kipper if it's not smoked it's a herring.

And another thing (not to do with kippers) why are supermarkets now calling blood oranges blush oranges or ruby oranges ? How ridiculous:rolleyes:

Quite right, absolutely stupid!! In fact I was looking for them in Waitrose last week for some time before I twigged that there was something on the shelves called 'blush' orange and that this might indeed be them! Crazy!

    A wise choice!
  • Well thanks again for all the replies.

We had kippers for the first time for breakfast yesterday morning, with bread (tiger loaf), butter and a poached egg on the side.

We opted for the fillets, rather than the shrink wrapped ones and they were delicious.

    Thank you again everyone!
