Good few years since I was there and I took Sterling. As I remember most purchases were made in US dollars.

    us dollars!!
although they have their own currency you will never see/use it.
everything is prices in us dollars. i took cash as some islands will not take travellers cheques. most things are charged to your room and you pay the nite before youleave.

Dollars, take plenty of low notes though for tips (tho depends on how often you want to tip).

We paid our final bill on Visa, accepted on the island we stayed at and only 35 rooms.

Which island are you going to?

what about all the little markets in the main towns, do they accept us dollars or only maldivian currency?
  • There arent really any main towns except on the main island of Male - all places should take us dollars.
  • I went twice last year with the Mrs, and we took only dollars and plenty of them! Take plenty of $1 bills as these will be your tips as everyone else has pointed out and then usually you can pay your bill for your island at the end of the holiday by dollars or by card.
Village trips and markets if you have the opportunity to visit an island will only take dollars as they are worth far more than their own currency and they get more money back.

have a great time! We enjoyed it so much we went back 9 weeks after our first trip!
and now i'm paying for it!

Dont take shoes either, only flip flops or bare feet!
