    I think both are joint
I would check that point - Most credit cards are in a sole name, with an additional card issued, rather than a joint and several liability. Nationwide did it to me many years ago, and once they realised their error, they were very apologetic, and generous to avoid a complaint to the FOS.

More **** for Halifax - they took £160 out of a childrens savings account the same time they raided my current account.

So now we are abandoning the crooks en masse - my current account, all childrens accounts, my MILs savings - even though they are tied up long term.

You say raided, but it's in their T&C's saying they're permitted to do this. They can argue that they're doing their best to try and prevent you having further charges and interest applied to the debt that you've not servicing.

General advice would be to empty your savings to service the debt - the interest you're earning won't match the interest you're being charged. Then, once you've got your debts sorted out, you can start rebuilding your savings.

If you think they've acted improperly or have taken money from accounts they're not entitled to then you would need to go down their complaints procedure and write to the FOS. Be interesting to hear who the FOS side with.

Problem is very simple it is NOT my money - it was given to the children from a bequest.

I had already contacted them and asked to freeze the account while I sorted a loan - they basically ignore all letters.

We only found out when some pocket money from a relative was paid in today, money came out in January.

I take it then that the account was in your name RE the children.
If so they were entitled to take the money.

If the accounts were solely in the name of the children they could not take it.

Fact is, the banks are in a no-win situation in many cases with this kind of thing. On the one hand they get people moaning that they were charged overdraft fees despite having available funds in savings accounts. And they also get people moaning if somebody looks at the accounts and move that money in order to save them from paying charges.

Banks are by no means innocent little babies in their charging policy, but I sympathise in cases like this.
