Consequently i now 'owe' approx £54, which i will not pay - Can anyone give me advice on how to deal with this appalling customer service?

I usually find that paying my bills on time is a good way to avoid "appalling customer service"..

I bet you a pack of Jammie Dodger's you pay the amount you owe.
These companies do not think twice about getting a debt collector around, which results in more charges.

Poor customer service and late payment charges due to your own oversight are two separate issues (I still don't see why you thought you could dispute this charge).

In hindsight, you should have paid the charge and then complained about the customer service issue (although you possibly would not have had the issue if you had paid the first charge?).

Why would the company want to keep your business? Irrespective of their customer service skills, they are still very popular, and losing one customer will make absolutely no difference to them.

It's hardly one customer when i tell of my experience to friends & family!

Irrespective of whether you think i was right or wrong, slamming the phone down & not giving a name is not acceptable under any cicumstances.

The reactions on here are what your friends and family will be thinking in their heads, despite what they say to your face!

As far as I am aware, they are not obliged to give their name - as long as they have done their job properly and explained everything they needed to, there would be no need for you to have their name. I agree, it can be annoying when this happens, but call centre staff have their own safety to think of, and threats have been made against people working in call centres over this kind of matter, some of them pretty horrific to be honest. Surely you would only really need their name if they were going to refund the charges - if they just told you that they weren't gonig to refund, it wouldn't make any difference who you spoke to as they weren't responsible for taking any action on your account.

Having worked in a call centre I've been reluctant to give my name, especially if the customer was being rude or abusive (I'm not assuming the OP is, but there was also a policy of terminating a phone if this was the case), instead I could give a unique staff number that could be used to identify me and only me.
So yeah it can be normal for them not to give their name, and terminating a phone call can be allowed-but normally the customer is warned that this will happen. Of course not having worked for Littlewoods I don't know their call centre policies, just my personal experience.
Out of my mind. Back in 5 minutes.
