I can't tell the difference and we eat a lot of sweetcorn loose and cobs. Cobs are great cooked and chilled for the kidz lunch boxes BTW. The way I cook mine is to cut them into cobbettes and stand 6 or so upright in a dish, add 2 tbsp of water and the lid and micro for 10mins or until cooked. HTH

    Hi,

At this time of year our favourite way of cooking them is to just grill them on the BBQ. Very quick & easy.

There was a cooking tip going around for bbq-ing corn by soaking it leaves and all in salt water for an hour, then cooking it leaves and all on the grill. Don't try this at home! - you do get a lovely big flame, though.

Marinate your corn in a balsalmic vinaigrette or whatever else you like and chuck it, without the leaves on the grill. Takes about 3 mins to do all sides.

I peel all the leaves off and the stringy bits .Wash them and then spread butter on them all round and wrap them tightly in cling film. Cook them separatley in the microwave for 4 mins on full. Leave them about 5 mins for the butter to soak in then remove the cling film and much away.
Lovely Mmmmmm. I wish i had one now.

I just found out that you can use the cores to make Sweetcorn jelly. No kidding :)

It's in the Cooking section of the MEGA Index.

I was told that you shouldn't salt the water when boiling them because it makes the cobs tough.

Um right. But I don't normally eat the cobs - just the sweetcorn that's on them :)

Or did you mean that it makes the sweetcorn tough?

<coff> My son, the chef, say's cooking with salt helps breakdown proteins and enhance flavours - told me off because I normally cook with none or very little!

The frozen cobbets from Asda and the like are delish. I much prefer frozen as they tend to be juicier and more tender. 2 only take about 4 mins in the microwave, I put them in a dish with a splosh of water then put another dish upside down on top.

Daughter (5) LOVES a cobbet with her dinner....shove a chopstick into one end or all the way through to provide a 'handle', smother in butter and a pinch of sea salt :) yum!
Just run, run and keep on running!

:o Silly question, but OH loves this and it's something my Mum never used to do! How do I cook it  I think I'm supposed to boil it, but how long for??? Anything that goes well with it too? Was just thinking of lots of butter, but would appreciate any other suggestions! Thank you!

    Hi cazza,

I strip the leaves off, and put it into a pan of cold water and bring it to the boil, then simmer for about 5 minutes. Drain and serve it immediately with lashings of butter and black pepper.

This link shows other ways of cooking it www.howtocookcornonthecob.com

Also there are more suggestions on this older thread that should help:

    Corn on the cob?

I'll merge your thread with that one later to keep all the ideas together.
