Still can't understand why putting in gear doesn't hold it. But I'm not that technically minded... ;)

I suppose the clutch must be slipping. If you try it yourself on a slope. Park, handbrake on, first gear. With engine off release handbrake (and be ready with fottbrake, saftey first etc), the car should be fully held. Dip the clutch, and at the point the clutch loses it's bite the car will roll, bring clutch up and this should stop the car.
  • vehicles can still move when left in gear, i used to "rock" the engine in gear to adjust valve clearances, the safest way to leave a vehicle would be to turn the wheels toward the pavement in the direction it would roll, so if it moved it would be trying to mount the pavement (making it harder to move), leave it in first or reverse gear (depending which way it would move), and apply the parking brake tightly.

  • i wont be touching my car at all to sort the problem my brother is a macanic so hes going to do it for me on saturday.
  • it's the engine compression that actually stops the car moving

I'm sorry to disagree but this isn't true. On a level road with the engine switched off, put your car in 5th gear and try and push it. You'll probably manage to succeed in moving it.

Try the above in first gear, and you will find it very difficult, if not impossible, to move it on your own.

It is the gearing of the gearbox that works against you. The lower the gear, the harder it is to move the car.

Exactly and thats just a gentle push on the level.

Put the car in gear, Ist lets say, take the handbrake off push it forwards the engine tries to turn one way, push it backwards and it rotates the oposite way. Take the plugs out and theres almost no resistance.

Now park the car on a hill take the handbrake off and try and hold it, you won't.

Being pedantic I know, and I'm not aware of a belt going due to this, but in theory thats why some would advise using 1st against reverse.

  • i have just parked my car on a slight slope and turned the engine off and put it in reverse without the handbrake i took foot of the brake and i rolled forwards

Fletcher, just how many times do people, not just me, need to give you good advice? If you'd care to note my reply was qualified with emoticons to avoid offence

I'm sorry if you don't want to accept what folks say but to a one we have said "get the car fixed or don't drive it 'til you do"

You have been told more times than I care to recount. It won't heal up on it's own!:wall: :wall: :wall:

if your car was facing down the hill and you put it in gear 1st,reverse or whatever,it is going to move slightly, until the movement and backlash is taken up in the gearbox and differential. it will only move a little though,no more than an inch or 2.

this is the last i will post on this overly long thread about a guy who has a brother who is a mechanic with fairly simple to repair mechanical problems.roll on satuarday so this gets fixed.
