  • oh i had it in 2nd i will try reverse 2morrow
  • It doesn't really matter whether you have it in 1st or reverse. The car doesn't "know" which way up or down a hill it's pointing!

The whole idea is that you want to be in as low a gear ratio as possible, as this provides the most resistance (or torque if you like). So to be safe, I'd personally leave it in 1st, as this has a lower gear ratio than reverse.
  • well my brother is a Mechanic so i will talk to him tomorrow if hes not busy. thanks for your help and advise

Why not ask him in the first place?
  • Either your handbrake cable has stretched through age and use (completely normal) and needs a slight tweak, or your rear shoes have worn and may need replacing.

Completely agree with other comments here regarding leaving it in 1st gear. Are you sure you're not in 3rd?

Handbrakes don't stretch. If they did they would be completely pointless.

  • OMG! Let's see now...Shall I make a quick call to my mechanic brother for advice.....or shall I spent hours of my life asking on a forum......?:confused:

Sorry for the sarcasm, but really...why not ask him in the first place?

If they don't stretch why is every car fitted with a cable adjuster.

To take up the slack when the handbrake cable is fitted.

  • To take up the slack when the handbrake cable is fitted.

Or to readjust when the cable has stretched. Which it will. Based on the youngs modulus, steel has a linear stress strain relationship
