Direct Line Car Insurance - NCD query

We are considering insuring our son's car in his own name at renewal and Direct Line are the cheapest. What we don't know and cannot find online is what percentage discount do they offer for the second year insurance if you have not made a claim?

  • I am assuming your son has earnt his first year as a named driver on a policy held by you. I have done this as well and am at the moment changing it over to my son at renewal with Direct Line also.
You have to be careful as the online quotes are never quite correct, my quote last year was priced differently when I contacted them by phone and only last week had a tusstle with them over another policy I took out for my husband ... originally online for 471.00 and have ended up with 222.00 by phone  [ I had already got two other quotes in the 200 bracket so I knew theirs was grossly overpriced]
my sons online quote using 1 year discount option box is a little over 500.00 different from showing 0 discount, which works out a little under 30% on our figures but............. nothing more comes off when I add we have additional policies, there should be 10% for this so I will be on the phone again tomorrow:rolleyes: I have another policy due for renewal in March so will be dangling this as a threat to cancel :D
I was assured last week that I would get the best deal by buying online but for the second year in a row it really does pay to get on the phone and hold on for an advisor

You are correct in that he has been driving for the last 4 years since he was 17 as a named driver on our policy. Just feel that it is time he started earning his own NCD. Will give Direct Line a call tomorrow and see if they can better the online price, although they are certainly quite a bit cheaper than other insurers.
  • we just got my daughter a car and she has no driving under her belt yet. We were quoted online from direct line (my partner is already with them) £783.30 a year one payment or £152.00 first payment followed by £69.38 a month after that total £846.41..

Elephants quote was £691.33 one off payment for the year but they dont do monthly...we also got quotes in excess of £1000!!
Happiness is not having what you want...but wanting what you have!!!

Thanks, will try Elephant as well then. Certainly worth a try to get the price down.

Just tried Elephant but they are £120 more than Direct Line. Thanks anyway. It was worth a try. Boys are always more expensive to insure than girls.

if it's actually his car then what you've been doing for the last 4 years is 'fronting' and is illegal.

you normally earn 30% discount on 1 yrs ncb, Did you know if he does his pass plus some companies will allow this discount now, however check with them before taking it as some will only allow this discount if completed within 12 months of passing his test.

I spent quite a long time on the phone to their complaints department about this. I had been a named driver for 1 year on my Mum's policy and have just bought my own car & insured it in my name with them. In the no claims box I put 1 year, also ticked the boxers for named driver on another policy and multi-car discount. Got the quote and paid, all fine. Then get a letter in the post asking for proof of my no claims. I phoned them up and said that they should have a record of me being a named driver for the past year so why do they need proof. They then tell me I was wrong to put 1 in the no claims box as I don't have any! There is a difference between no claims discount and named driver no claims discount. They said named drivers only get 27% whereas normal no claims get 35%. They then adjusted my premium which obviously went up, I was not happy! After I tried to persuade them to keep it the same I was informed that you cannot have both a named driver no claims and multi-car discount but as a gesture of goodwill they would let me keep it if I paid the extra £130 premium. I gave in in the end. Now pay £1,376. Still a bit steep but £700 cheaper than the next quote from comparison websites...

Well you were advised correctly and i would be grateful of their goodwill gesture, because only the policy holder earns no claims bonus im afraid!

He has taken and passed the Institute of Advanced Motorists test but the insurance companies who offer a discount for this are more expensive anyway.
