I have gone through the activation key for xp home. I am looking at the boot.ini file and it seems to sow it also ine the c: drive so I think I may have copied over the top of xp pro and there all the files are mixed. How can I reinstall it but get rid of the old o/s first?

Sorry if I seem to be rushing through this I have a wriggly 2 year old on my lap shouting for dinner.

Looking at this perhaps I should start from scratch and reinstall everything but making sure I get rid of it all first. I assume it's not as easy as formating a drive :/

look for 2 "windows" directories on the drives - the boot ini will be like

    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" <<<< edit this to be your boot.ini

Your XP home will be the one with the newest files - XP Pro will have no recent files ... easy way to check --- Recovery D may allow you to get XP Pro back unless ur friend was a deleter of anything in sight ....

NOOOOOO - use the one I pasted - as template -- so we can see the pc's boot.ini that you have there --- trying to save you typing ....
