Doorstep selling I would have thought is a difficult job and to do it properly without misselling needs skill on the salespersons' part. People that do have the requirements such as communication, persuasion, etc probably do other jobs which are far more easier, pays better and has a better status.

As a result its probably an industry attracting people without the qualities to do the job to set standards but are ready to cut corners and say whatever (lies) to meet targets. Perhaps with the recession this maybe changing as shortage of jobs in other areas may mean energy companies have a greater pool of possible recruits.

And why is it these companies always tries to sell on price when in reality there is not much diffrerence between any of the companies (unless the person has never changed, willing to get bills online, etc).

My father had a gas leak over the weekend and a chap turned up at his door saying the neighbours had complained about it. He asked if he was the engineer and he was told he was much, much higher than that: he was the district manager. The chap then gained my father’s trust, until he started saying that British Gas doesn’t exist and that it’s actually Centrica based in India. Then came the spiel about Southern Electric being the cheapest. I find it disgusting that they have to resort to these tactics to prey on the elderly. For 10 mins he made out he was a manager for British Gas! (This was in the Derbyshire area and trading standards have been informed so please be vigilant)
  • you need to contact OFGEM the company regulator, these will make note of your complaint and fine the company if mis selling has taken place, also as this sales person has used a false identity ,that of someone working for the goverment you can also contact your local police so that he doesnt get away with it with anyone else in your area, elderly people are especially vunerable, i used to work for southern electric and know very well how they gain acess to your property by letting you think they are from your local council.
  • no , electric is supplied by NEDL and gas by TRANSCO, it all comes from the same place southern electric is just a billing company as are all the others e-on npower b/gas etc, when you change company the only thing that changes is the name on the bill and the price you pay, the supply of the gas and electric remains the same, the sales rep has told you a blatent lie
