I've just put some numbers into a basic spreadsheet and come up with this.

This is assuming there is no postage involved, and that the standard paypal rate of 3.4% + 20p is applied. This does not take into account any of the discounts being offered to high volume sellers either.

It's not all rosy news then - the only benefit of the fee "realignment" is to those selling items for under £1....

  • 7.5% !?!?!?

    That's loopy.

If I am clearing high value items from home, like a pushchair for £100 then why should ebay get £7.50 when it sells? Plus the money to list in the first place. Plus whatever paypal smack me with for the privelidge that someone won't use the safe and reliable UK banking system!

I think I'm gonna push to shift as much of my home junk as I can before 20th Feb and then consider giving up my ebay life. It's just been one bad move after another with them for months now and I've had enough.
  • Ebay earnings up 52%??! Do we not think that they could afford to start giving something back?
:D**Thanks to everyone on here for hints, tips and advice!**:D

Apparrently ebay's share prices have dropped today by a little over 2%, if I can find a link to check then I'll post it rather than rely on word of mouth.

However according to the new CEO when asked about the changes he said that sellers are pleased..well he isn't reading the same threads I am then!

I don't have a problem with fees - after all, eBay gives me exposure to a market not available anywhere else, but using your scenario as an example - if you start the listing at £9.99, it ends at £100 and the buyer uses paypal, you will pay a total of £14.65 in fees to ebay/paypal, and thats not including any paypal fees on the postage element.

I think a lot of private sellers are going to start looking at the smaller sites like https://www.tazbar.com, https://www.121bid.com, https://www.ebid.com etc - as these sites are more cost effective to list on, they will be more suited to the smaller seller, and savvy buyers will be able to take advantage of the lower traffic combined with low seller fees leading to lower selling prices. It's just a case of these sites getting the publicity now.

  • So let me get this straight: both ebay.com and ebay.co.uk sellers have to pay the same increased FVFs but they get their gallery pictures for free and we don't??
    Ebid, here I come...
  • I've already put some things on Tazbar , problem is they don't seem to buy many plants over there and thats all I sell.
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.

I am trying out selling on ebid for the first time. I am a bit cautious as it doesn't look that popular. The fees are BRILLIANT on there, just as a basic seller there are NO FEES!! You have to pay one off fees (not a %) to become a regular seller, but I would consider this if it worked out.

If ebid become more popular I will definitely say BYE BYE to ebay for good!!! Go and have a look for yourself!
  • will be looking at ebid inthe near future, plus with royal mail prices increasing the cost of sending an item by 11%, not looking like a good start to the year! tazbar was taken over by new management after a whole hoohaa with fees recently so would be keen to see what they do now that there are a lot of angry ebay sellers looking to find another avenue to sell
