Which wireless router?

I followed this advice and bought a Netgear router which was not too bad to install (although not exactly simple). I got it up and running within about 45 mins which is good going for me! Then I couldn't get my work laptop to connect, phoned our IT helpdesk who mentioned a switch on the side which I'd forgotten about. They also said that they recommend Netgear for homeworking and even supply them - if I'd put in a request I could have had applied for one!
Never mind - I am connected and no longer have to compete with my son for the PC.somewhere between Heaven and Woolworth's0 -
I would like to say here that I find Linksys unbeatable for a un-techie like me.I several times messed up the connection through my own fault but just phone up the FREE 24 hour support number and the staff will talk you through every step of the way.
The first question they ask is how long you have been on hold and every time I tell them just seconds.
Superb

I'd stay away from 3com - we bought one in August and needed to ring this week - we were told we only had 3 months tech support from them for it and we couldn't get passed this very arrogant woman to get to speak to anyone else. All she could offer us was a repair or replacement when all we wanted was the settings to get our wireless working after it reset itself.0

Which you would find in the user manual.

Most makes of router are up and running within five minutes if you follow the simple instructions in the user manual. The fact that you had problems with a D Link, does not mean that they are no good!

Exactly, I've use D-Link stuff without problem and strangely enough had a few problems with Linksys hardware. I don't think it was anything inherent in the manufacturer's quality. You can just be unlucky with some hardware."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Yes I have set up various D Link routers etc. and find that their user manuals are very comprehensive. If fact I won't buy kit from companies that you can't download their user manuals from before making a purchase now!

Just to add to that, i bought a D Link wireless router and the thing would not hold a stable connection to my dell laptop full stop. I sold it on ebay and it worked fine for that guy (luckily). I also remember at the time finding some documented reasons why there were problems. Even a quick check of D Link routers on amazon has thrown up the following...
"When I tried to connect to the internet with the router, following the ISPs instuctions to the letter, every attempt failed miserably. So in desperation I decided to try a Netgear router which I had purchase from Amazon for our second home in Spain and bingo I was up and running in less than 15mins. I will avoid D-Link equipment in future. "
" purchased this item in January this year (2007) and when I got it it was wonderful and worked great, was easy to use etc, around April time the wireless kept going off and on and the internet connection kept going off as well (i connected another router which worked so my internet connection was fine)"
I've used Netgear routers ever since - probably sold and installed 50+ of them and had no problems. I'm sure D-Link are generally a good company but i personally have never had much luck with their routers, and it would appear there is a history there with other users too.0
