Stolen phone Orange nightmare

I had my phone stolen last week but inspite of giving Orange a crime number they say my insurance doesn't cover a replacement due to 'failure to take reasonable care...' etc etc etc. Having only just renewed my contract I am faced with buying myself out of my contract (6 months at £60 then 6 months reduced to lowest tariff £24) £70 to arrange a replacement or £17 for a sim card if I can get hold of an old handset. Naturally I am furious with Orange that my insurance is worth nothing and I don't really want to give them another penny...what can I do?

Write a clear and succint letter into Orange recorded delivery stating your situation, and give them 7 days to write back - if they aren't budging just cancel the direct debit and don't let the credit control letters (bill collectors) scare you - they really aren't that efficient.
  • Out of interest, what were the circumstances? It does seem very strange, especially if you've got the crime ref. number. I dare say if you call up again and speak to another person or supervisor the result may be different.

Perhaps lesson for future when making claims on insurance you need to be very careful how you explain the incident as insurance companies will use 'failure to take reasonable care' as a means of getting out of it.

After 6 months, there are cheaper tarriffs than £24/month. Try OVP tarriff. Cheapest is a vodaphone business at £14/month with no inclusive minutes. See the orange website

I've read of quite a few people who find this with Orange. For example I've read of some who have had their phone stolen from off their belt and Orange's insurance won't pay as they say the phone was in plain view, so don't tuck in tee-shirts/shirts/blouses etc if you have your phone on a belt clip!

Third party insurance "might" be a better option.
  • We had this problem with insurance through Singlepoint (undewritten by Allianz Cornhill)...because my boyfs phone was in his pocket on back of chair at a WEDDING!! when it went missing they wouldn't pay out - inference from them was basically you would have to have been in fear of your life and given up your phone to get em to pay out! He just used an old phone for 4 months (ok if you have that option). Since this entire debacle I have stuck my Sony Ericsson K700i on the contents (with the Co-op, who I could rave about all day long!) for £3.89 per annum...and believe me I've thoroughly checked it and covered against all eventualities!! Know that doesn't really help current predicament - soz

My mate got mugged and his nokia 6230 stolen. He did not have insurance and only 3 months into his contract. He rang up ORANGE who told him the same thing as they told you.

I got wind of this and asked him to ring ORANGE so i could speak to them as my mate is a bit of a push over,

Before i even spoke to anyone, ORANGE told him to take out insurance now, and pay £15.00 for which they would replace the phone. I think they called it emergency insurance.

I was shocked that any company would offer this but then again his bill is normally £200 a month (£30.00 line rental) and if he has no phone, then they lose out,

    Give it a try again!.
