What to do with Jupiter UK Growth fund

Options
Hello All,

I have a fund of £10k invested in Jupiter UK Growth fund through Hargreaves Lansdown (Value as of 28th Jan!). I would like some opinions, if I should hold or switch some of this investment to give a more globally balanced fund. All press seems to be about Natural resource and Asia funds.

Any funds to investigate would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

What was the reasoning behind your initial investment ?

Ok..as it's a long term investment the current turmoil should have less impact on your decision making

As a fund in the UK All Company's sector, Jupiter UK Growth has a pretty decent track record, and a well rated Manager

If your initial decision making process was to invest in a UK fund then I would leave it where it is

If the decision to invest in a UK fund wasn't made for any particular reason, then maybe it is a good idea to revisit the decision

As for the current 'flavour of the month' such as Natural Resources or Asia/Pacific, one thing to bear in mind is that often by the time the media jump onto the 'bandwagon' the major move could well be over. If you are tempted to invest in Funds such as this, you will need to take a pro-active approach to your investment, as it is high risk

Personally I think that an investment like this would benefit from a more Global approach in the current climate to spread the risk

There are plenty of Global Growth funds that invest in all markets around the world, although funds in this sector vary greatly, and research to find the one to suit is important. This type of fund should be classed quite high on the risk scale.

A Balanced Managed Fund, while not always producing the 'gaudy' performance numbers of more risky funds could also be an area to investigate. Again research is important as 'Balanced' Managed can mean a lot of different things. A good fund in this sector is Neptune Balanced, maanaged by a top manager and with a mandate that allows it to invest globally, whilst keeping most of it's focus on the U.K.

Thanks for your detailed input Purch.

I want al least 50-60% of my investment to be UK based.

Don't want to panic while the markets are so volatile, howerer it is always in the back of my mind that it could be a good time to move into a cautious position or outside the UK.

I will take a look at Global funds and the Neptune balanced.

Also, as I am drip feeding into the investment, the up side when the market dips I get more stock for my dosh!

    Thanks again.
  • Good fund - I have it too and have held for about 10 years so far and have no intention of getting rid at the moment.

However is this your only fund? If so you might want to consider spreading / diversifying a bit as if 10k is 100% of your investment then it is a bit of a risk.

I also like global funds - but you need to be a little careful because some are racier than others so best to read around a bit.

Also UK Equity Income has been a great sector. Not done brilliantly in the last year but some excellent managers and good long term performance.

As for Emerging Markets / Far East / Natural Resources. There are good reasons why they should do well but getting the core sorted out with maybe a little exposure to the more exciting areas may be sensible...... but you never know.

    Thanks MrMicawber .

I have decided to stick with the Jupiter UK Growth fund and will look into Global funds. I have set up the following and drip feeding into them all (except Russia).

    Jupiter UK Growth
    Marborough UK Special Situations
    JPMorgan Natural Resources
Neptune Russia (Just Stuck 1k in, high risk I know)

I beleive this will be classed High risk, but I am in for the long term.
